Green Iguanas

Welcome to my site!

my iguana, Tiamat

Green iguanas are members of the family Iguanidae. The range of the green iguana extends throughout Central and South America, and they are adapted to very warm temperatures.

In captivity, a green igauna should be provided a temperature zone from 83°-95° Fahrenheit, with a basking area from 95°-100° Fahrenheit.

Research has shown that green iguanas require ultraviolet B (UVB) light in order to be able to process vitamin D3 in their body. Vitamin D3 serves many functions and plays a important role in calcium absorption. Green iguanas that are not provided UVB light may develop rickets. To prevent this problem, recomment that iguanas receive 12 hours of exposure to a full-spectrum light. The bulb should be positioned within 18 inches of the animal and have direct exposure to the skin.

Iguanas in the wild are strict herbivores. 90 percent of your iguanas diet should be vegetables and 10 percent fruits. To avoid getting your pet hooked on just a few foods, be sure to feed a wide selection of appropriate foods in the right proportions.

Here is a list of some good vegetables to feed your iguana.
