La fibra es u=
n medio de
transmisión de información analógica o digital. Las on=
das
electromagnéticas viajan en el espacio a la velocidad de la luz.
Básicamente, la fibra ópti=
ca
está compuesta por una región cilíndrica, por la cual =
se
efectúa la propagación, denominada núcleo y de una zona
externa al núcleo y coaxial con él, totalmente necesaria para=
que
se produzca el mecanismo de propagación, y que se denomina envoltura=
o
revestimiento.
La capacidad de transmisión de
información que tiene una fibra óptica depende de tres
características fundamentales:

a) Del dise=
ño
geométrico de la fibra.
b) De las propiedades de los materiales
empleados en su elaboración. (diseño óptico) =

c) De la anchura espectral de la fuent=
e de luz
utilizada. Cuanto mayor sea esta anchura, menor será la capacidad =
de
transmisión de información de esa fibra.<=

un diámetro aproximado de 8 o 10 mm. y proporciona la misma o m&aacu=

información que un coaxial de 10 tubos.
El peso del cable de fibras óptic=

muy inferior al de los cables metálicos, redundando en su facilidad =
de
instalación.
El sílice tiene un amplio margen =
de
funcionamiento en lo referente a temperatura,pues funde a 600C. La F.O.
presenta un funcionamiento uniforme desde -550 C a +125C sin degradaci&oacu=
te;n
de sus características.
La mayor&iacu=
te;a de
las fibras ópticas se hacen de arena o sílice, materia prima
abundante en comparación con el cobre. con unos kilogramos de vidrio
pueden fabricarse aproximadamente 43 kilómetros de fibra ópti=
ca.
Los dos constituyentes esenciales de las fibras ópticas son el
núcleo y el revestimiento. el núcleo es la parte más
interna de la fibra y es la que guía la luz.

varias hebras delgadas de vidrio o de plástico con diámetro=
de
50 a 125 micras. el revestimiento es la parte que rodea y protege al
núcleo.
El conjunto de núcleo y revesti=
miento
está a su vez rodeado por un forro o funda de plástico u ot=
ros
materiales que lo resguardan contra la humedad, el aplastamiento, los
roedores, y otros riesgos del entorno.

La F.O. como elemento resistente dispuesto en el interior de un cable forma=
do
por agregación de varias de ellas, no tiene características
adecuadas de tracción que permitan su utilización directa.
Por otra parte, en la mayoría de =
los
casos las instalaciones se encuentran a la intemperie o en ambientes agresi=
vos
que pueden afectar al núcleo.
La investigación sobre componentes
optoelectrónicos y fibras ópticas han traído consigo un
sensible aumento de la calidad de funcionamiento de los sistemas. Es necesa=
rio
disponer de cubiertas y protecciones de calidad capaces de proteger a la fi=
bra.
Para alcanzar tal objetivo hay que tener en cuenta su sensibilidad a la
curvatura y microcurvatura, la resistencia mecánica y las
características de envejecimiento.
Las microcurvaturas y tensiones se deter=
minan
por medio de los ensayos de:

Tensión: cuando se estira o contrae el cable se=
pueden
causar fuerzas que rebasen el porcentaje de elasticidad de la fibra
óptica y se rompa o formen microcurvaturas.
·
=
Compresión: es el esfuerzo transversal.
·
=
Impacto: se debe principalmente a las proteccio=
nes del
cable óptico.
·
=
Enrollamiento: existe siempre un límite para el
ángulo de curvatura pero, la existencia del forro impide que se
sobrepase.
·
=
Torsión: es el esfuerzo lateral y de tracci&oac=
ute;n.
Limitaciones Térmicas: Estas limitaciones difieren en alto grado
según se trate de fibras realizadas a partir del vidrio o a partir de
materiales sintéticos.
Otro objetivo es minimizar las pé=
rdidas
adicionales por cableado y las variaciones de la atenuación con la
temperatura. Tales diferencias se deben a diseños calculados a veces
para mejorar otras propiedades, como la resistencia mecánica, la cal=
idad
de empalme, el coeficiente de relleno (número de fibras por mm2) o el
costo de producción.
Involucra el uso de una fibra con un diámetro de 5 a 10
micras. Esta fibra tiene muy poca atenuación y por lo tanto se usan =
muy
pocos repetidores para distancias largas. Por esta razón es muy usada
para troncales con un ancho de banda aproximadamente de 100 GHz por kilomet=
ro
(100 GHz-km).
Una de las aplicaciones más común de las fibras
monomodo es para troncales de larga distancia, en donde se emplea para cone=
ctar
una o mas localidades; las ligas de enlace son conocidas comúnmente =
como
dorsales (backbone).
Existen
dos Tipos para este modo los cuales son Multimodo/Índice fijo y
Multimodo/Índice Gradual. El primer tipo es una fibra que tiene un a=
ncho
de banda de 10 a 20 MHz y consiste de un núcleo de fibra rodeado por=
un
revestimiento que tiene un índice de refracción de la luz muy
bajo, la cual causa una atenuación aproximada de 10 dB/Km. Este tipo=
de
fibra es usado típicamente para distancias cortas menores de un
kilometro. El cable mismo viene en dos tamaños 62.5/125 micras. Debi=
do a
que el diámetro exterior es de 1 mm, lo hace relativamente fá=
cil
de instalar y hacer empalmes. El segundo tipo Índice Gradual es una
cable donde el índice de refracción cambia gradualmente, esto
permite que la atenuación sea menor a 5 dB/km y pueda ser usada para
distancias largas. El ancho de banda es de 200 a 1000 MHz , el diáme=
tro
del cable es de 50/125 micras. (el primer número es el diámet=
ro
del núcleo y el segundo es el diámetro del revestimiento).

Los empalmes utilizados para conectar ambos extremos de las
fibras causan también una perdida de la señal en el rango d=
e 1
dB. Así también los conectores o interfaces incurren
también en perdidas de 1 dB o más. Los haces de luz (LED) s=
on
transmitidos en el orden de 150 Mbps. Los láser en cambio transmit=
en
en el orden de Gbps. Los LEDs son típicamente mas confiables que l=
os
láser, pero los láser en cambio proveen más
energía a una mayor distancia. Debido a que los lasers tienen una =
menor
dispersión son capaces de transmitir a velocidades muy altas en el
modo de transmisión simple. Sin embargo, los láser necesitan
estar térmicamente estabilizados y necesitan ser mantenidos por
personal más especializado.

La transmisión de luz en una fibra óptica no es 100% eficient=
e.
La pérdida de luz en la transmisión es llamada atenució=
;n.
Varios factores influyen tales como la absorción por materiales dent=
ro
de la fibra, disipación de luz fuera del núcleo de la fibra y
pérdidas de luz fuera del núcleo causado por factores
ambientales.
La atenuación en una fibra es medida al comparar la potencia de sali=
da
con la potencia de entrada. La atenuación es medida en decibeles
por unidad de longitud. Generalmente esta expresada en decibeles por kilome=
tro
(dB/km).
Dispersión La dispersión es la distorsión de la
señal, resultante de los distintos modos (simple y multimodo), debid=
o a
los diferentes tiempos de desplazamiento de una señal a travé=
s de
la fibra. En un sistema modulado digitalmente, esto causa que el pulso reci=
bido
se ensanche en el tiempo [ver figura]. No hay pérdida de potencia en=
la
dispersión, pero se reduce la potencia pico de la señal. La
dispersión aplica tanto a señales analógicas como
digitales. La dispersión es normalmente especificada en nanosegundos=
por
kilometro.

Dispersión en una fibra óptica
La dispersión de una energía ópt=
ica
cae en dos categorías: la dispersión modal y la dispersi&oacu=
te;n
espectral.
Dispersión modal: La luz viaja en trayectorias diferentes para
cada modo en una fibra. Cada ruta varia la longirud óptica de la fib=
ra
para cada modo. En un cable largo, el estiramiento y sumatoria de todos los
modos de la fibra tienen un efecto "de longitud" sobre el pulso
óptico.
Dispersión espectral: El índice refractivo es inversam=
ente
proporcional a la velocidad de la luz que viaja en un medio y su velocidad
varia con respecto a su longitud de onda. Sin embargo si dos rayos tienen
diferentes longitudes de onda son enviados simultaneamente sobre la misma
trayectoria, estos arribaran ligeramente a diferentes tiempos. Esto causa l=
os mismo
efectos de la dispersión modal, ensanchando el pulso óptico. =
La
dispersión modal puede ser minimizada reduciendo el ancho del espect=
ro
de la fuente óptica.
