Charles “Lucky” Luciano, born as Salvator Lucania, was a legendary mobster born in Sicily, Italy. Luciano has committed numerous crimes and murders, but awkwardly enough this man was an american hero in World War I. For the first ten years of his life, he remained in Sicily. Soon after his family moved to america. It didnt take long for lucky to establich himself as a man in charge. In true mafia style he wold order his classmates at school to pay him a few cents and in turn they would recieve his “protection.” All this really meant was that if you dont pay me, i’ll beat the crap out of you. In 1906 his family moved to the lower east side of New York. He was first arrested in 1907. By 1916 Luciano had established the Five Points Gang. A gang made up of Meyer Lansky, Bugsy Siegel, and as well as Frank Costello. This gang was suspected of being involved in many murders. He became friends with Al Capone at this time. Another mobster that influenced american culture. Towards the end of the 1920’s Luciano became one of the leaders of another mafia family. It was led by Joe “the boss” Masseria. This was Luciano’s rival at the time, so he joined forces with Maranzano. Maranzano had the same opinion as Luciano. Lucky and Maranzano plotted to kill Masseria at a Coney Island restaraunt. On April 15, 1931, Lucky met with Masseria at Coney Island restaraunt. They discussed what their plans were for some upcoming business. Lucky asked to exscuse himself to the restroom. As Lucky was in the restroom, Maranzano and his men entered the restaraunt and took Masseria out of commission. They fled the scene as Lucky acted in total surprise upon exiting the restroom. The real reason that Maranzano was helping Luciano out in this assisination was so that he could easily double cross him and have him killed off. When Luciano and Lansky learned of this, they arranged to have four of Lansky's associates, disguised as government agents, come to Maranzano's office, where they then killed him. These killers reportedly met Irishman Mad Dog Coll, a gunman who had been hired by Maranzano to kill Luciano and Genovese, coming up the stairs as they were descending after killing Maranzano; they told Coll that the police were raiding the place and Coll fled too. In 1929 Luciano was nearly murdered. His throat was slashed from ear to ear, but he miraculously survived. This is where he received his nickname “Lucky.” After his hostile takeover, Luciano organized organized crime. He modernized the Mafia, shaping it into a smoothly run national crime syndicate focused on the bottom line. The syndicate was operated by two dozen family bosses who controlled bootlegging, numbers, narcotics, prostitution, the waterfront, the unions, food marts, bakeries and the garment trade, their influence was always expanding, infiltrating and corrupting business, politics and law enforcement. Lucky was eventually convicted of running prostitution rings. He was sentanced to 30 to 50 years in prison. After Pearl Harbor, German U-boats off the U.S. coast were sinking merchant ships regularly. The U.S. were convinced that Germany was being aided by spies or Nazi sympothizers. They turned to Lucky to put the word out on the streets to listen up for anything about spies. And before long 8 were located thanks to some loyal friends of Lucky. The 8 Men were found with explosives and plans for sabatoge. This got Lucky early relase from prison, but he was being deported back to his homeland of Sicily. On January 26, 1962 Lucky died in the airport of a heart attack.
