SC #7a. Swimming precautions

p Tell what precautions must be taken for a safe swim. (BSA Safe Swim Defense Program)

SC #7b. Demo swim ability

p Demonstrate your ability to jump feet first into water over your head in depth, level off and swim 25 feet on the surface, stop, turn sharply, resume swimming, then return to your starting place.

(1 length, equal to the Playdium pool.)

SC #7c. Demo water rescue

Demonstrate water rescue methods

p by reaching with your arm or leg,

p by reaching with a suitable object,

p and by throwing lines and objects.

p Explain why swimming rescues should not be attempted when a reaching or throwing rescue is possible, and explain why and how a rescue swimmer should avoid contact with the victim.

FC #9a. Safe trip afloat

p Tell what precautions must be taken for a safe trip afloat.

FC #9b. BSA swimmer test

p Successfully complete the BSA swimmer test.

(4 lengths, equal to the Playdium pool.)

The BSA Swimmer Test: Jump feet first into water over the head in depth, level of, and begin swimming. Swim 75 yards in a strong manner using one or more of the following strokes: sidestroke, breaststroke, trudgen, or crawl; then swim 25 yards using an easy, resting backstroke. The 100 yards must be completed in one swim without stops and must include at least one sharp turn. After completing the swim, rest by floating.

FC #9c. / #9d. Show line rescue (#9c was returned to the Swimmimg Merit Badge requirements, and what was #9d takes its place.)

With a helper and a practice victim, show a line rescue both as tender and rescuer. (The practice victim should be approximately 30 feet from shore in deep water.)
