Dolphins

Dolphins are probably one of our best loved marine mammals, with films such as Flipper forever endearing them to our hearts. With their intelligence and love of play dolphins are easily trained to perform tricks which has meant, unfortunately, that they have been exploited by humans. Captive dolphins were once a common feature of sea-life centres, but watching them in their natural element is a far superior experience.

Dolphins are not fish, but are actually mammals, and are related to whales and porpoises. The largest member of the dolphin family unbelievably, especially due to its name, is the orca commonly known as the killer whale. The easiest way to tell a dolphin from a fish is by the tail which is called a fluke, as dolphins hold their tails horizontally and move them up and down, whereas a fish’s tail is vertical and moves from side to side.
