The United States for the past few decades has had dramatically more murders by handguns than nations such as Japan. Handguns are primarily used for one purpose, killing people. Other countries like Japan have made the decision that handguns have no place among a civilian population. Coincidentally, Japan has the lowest murder rate of any country in the world, despite having more densely populated areas and one of the largest cities in the world, Tokyo. In fact in 1996 New York City had more murders than the entire country of Japan.Tokyo's handgun murder rate remains over 100 times lower than that of the United States. In fact, someone is murdered in the United States every 30 minutes, an average of over 11,000 people per year. This madness must come to an end. I believe that unrestricted access to hand guns greatly contributes to murder in America. It is not the place of civilized nations in the world today to allow their civilian population unfeathered access to these lethal compact killing machines. In the United States we have pursued a policy of guns that has failed with dire consequences to the very social fabric of society.
