Types of Turtles and Tortoises

Swish! A Green Sea Turtle swims by me at the aquarium. I saw it had a shell. I never saw a creature with a shell before. That's how I got interested in turtles. I was four when I got interested in turtles.

Now comes the information. Turtles are reptiles. They are cold-blooded. They lay eggs. The top part of the shell is called the carapace and the bottom of the shell is called the plastron. There are three kinds of turtles, sea turtles, water turtles, and land turtles are called tortoises. Turtles hibernate. Turtles have scaly skin. They like sunbathing on rocks, logs, etc. If it is cold turtles will sleep more. If it is hot or warm turtles will be more active. Turtles do not have gills. They have lungs. They have sharp vision. They have eyelids. Tortoises usually has a high domed shell. Tortoises have short elephant like feet with unwebbed toes.
