History

The islands are a group in the northern Baltic, at the mouth of the Gulf of Bothnia. Formerly they belonged to Sweden but were transferred first to Russia, which then ruled Finland and later to Finland following the wars between Sweden and Russia in the 18th century. The population speak almost entirely Swedish. Their rights are guaranteed under a treaty between Sweden and Finland.
