History

Part of the Comoro Islands, but still a French colony as the inhabitants voted to remain with France when the other islands became independent in 1975. However a UN declaration states that Mayotte should be a part of the territory of the Comoros who claim that Mayotte is a natural part of the island group.

The people voted to remain with France. The reason seems to be the influences of the settlers, planters from Reunion. Mayotte is one of two French colonies in the Indian Ocean. The other is Reunion. The territory is an Overseas Territory of France but not (as some of the voters wanted) a Department of Metropolitan France.

The African Union considers it as a colony that ought to belong to the Comoros.
