"I'm a starving artist in a
starving province."
I was born in Toronto and
unwittingly transported to this province as a child by my parents who hoped to
find a better life in this province of Newfoundland, boy were they
disappointed. I did somehow manage to get 2, count em' 2 expensive and useless
pieces of paper, a diploma in Visual Arts from the Western Community College in
Stephenville and a degree in Fine arts at Sir Wilfred Grenfell College in
Corner Brook. Both of which prepared me not for the real world so I ended up
working for myself for a couple of years as a Graphic Artist, before computers
were affordable, designing by hand. That lasted till I got a "real"
job at a photo studio in Corner Brook as a darkroom technician, which also
turned from a photographer, to computer technician then finally digital
darkroom technician. I got tired of the fumes and chemicals and decided to try
my hand at school again since I was doing more computer work than photography I
thought it would be nice to learn the proper way to fix and network computers
instead of guessing.
As for my art, I majored on
Photography but did most of my work combining photography with printmaking
basing a lot of my work on old photographs of my hometown Port Aux Basques.
When I did do art, I did everything from drawing portraits, painting road
signs, airbrushing t-shirts, murals and just about anything that moved. While
in school I worked as a museum tour guide during the summers, which gave me
access to a lot of old photographs of the town, and with the help of local
people I managed to gather quite a collection of photos of the town and its
people. From this collection I did a quite a few prints while at school based
on these images and trying to perfect 4 color separations without the correct
technology getting interesting results.
This web site is a collection
of my work as an artist and professional photographer, all of the work you see
here is for sale, though unframed since glass wouldn't survive the post office
very well.
