NEWMAN PORTRAIT GALLERY

For most of the earlier images, and those of the Rowland of Hawkridge branch, I express deep gratitude to CHRIS NEWMAN for publishing them on his website, which also gives the most well-sourced and definitive picture of Newman lives as known at the present time, together with compelling and perceptive commentaries.

This is a Printable Version, suitable for A4 sheets;  there is also an Internet Version of this Gallery...

Hollis Louis NEWMAN was the grandson of François NEWMAN, b. at the Chateau Dorne;  he married Elena Ford-Roly of mixed Scots and Creole ancestry, and his daughter was Norita, writer, who m. Andrew MASSICOT.  Their daughter Ynola Lucille m. Charles GANDOLFO in 1934;  Jerry GANDOLFO, family historian, is therefore Hollis' gr-grandson.  He has tracked descendants of Francis [IV] Newman to various plantation families of NEWMAN surname in Maryland (LA GRANGE), Alabama (OAKLAWN) and Louisiana (KENILWORTH).  Names in brackets are those of the various family plantations most associated with the surname.

It is worth noting that Lilian Jekyll PAYNTER was the daughter of Henrietta NEWMAN, so that Walter and Lilian were first cousins.  I believe that Lilian was related on the Paynter side to the JEKYLL family, also in the Newman pedigree.  Walter's younger brother Charles Octavius Newman, last of the 'Newman Room', also married his cousin, Clara Frances JEKYLL.  He is incorrectly shown as 'd.s.p.' in my chart, one of several errors relating to this family, and in fact had three children, incl. Charles Francis Newman (d. 1964) and at least one grandchild, Heather.

Nanna WEBB (Annie Teresa nee JENKIN) an influential and formative figure in many childhoods.  She was the daughter of Elizabeth NEWMAN KETTLE, named after Elizabeth Newman of Farncombe Hall, co. Surrey.  Her Newmans were of the Thomas (Farnham, 1665) line.  Less than 5 feet tall;  my uncle Sandys (RSCN, pictured, and obviously not closely related to ATW), by way of contrast was 6 feet 3 inches.  To anyone born before metric measurement, differences expressed in 'feet' still seem remarkable.

There is also a wonderful photograph of my aunt, Patricia Alice MAPLESON (née NEWMAN), sister of my father Maurice and uncle Sandys, when she was in her twenties.  It should have been included in these snapshots, but I have been unable to bring it to my computer scanner in order to upload it.  It was aways my intention to have included it in this website, and hopefully I or someone else one day will do so.  It belongs between those of my father and my uncle RSCN.

Rowland [I] was Vicar of Hawkridge with WITHYPOOL in the remotest parts of Somerset in the 'wilds of Exmoor' for 37 years.  His eldest son, Revd. Rowland [II] Alan Webb Newman, took on the same parish, which I understand had been associated with his grandfather, Dr.JEKYLL, father of Charlotte and father-in-law of Edwin [II] the 'Squire of Hendford'.  In those days the lonely parish would indeed have been remote, sparsely populated and alarmingly close to nature.  All that I have been able to glean of Rowland's family comes from the Website of Chris Newman, whose treasure trove yields surprisingly elaborate details that confirm Newman 'themes' found recurring elsewhere.

'R1' and 'Granny Rowland' had FIVE (5) surviving children four of whom I have not mentioned elsewhere.  They were, [1] Rowland [II] 'Rowie' Alan Webb Newman (1878-1958), who succeeded his father in EXMOOR, and sadly fell victim to bone TB after a long and busy life;  [2] Claude Edwin Sandys Newman (1880-1942), a soldier in Boer and First World Wars, deftly avoiding injury [rather like his 2nd cousin Charles], who trained as a surveyor and later ran a mechanic's shop [rather like his 2nd cousin Frank], I understand in DARTMOUTH, of whom by two marriages (his 1st wife died in 1931) were the 'Sandys Newmans';  [3] Violet Sherston Newman-Kinch (1882-1965) who worked as a nurse in MESOPOTAMIA after the 1st War, then met and married Commander 'Bunny' KINCH and accompanied him to INDIA where they lived until partition [1947], retiring to BARNSTAPLE, in NE-Somerset;  [4] Katherine Charlotte Jekyll, kn. as 'Kitty' (1884-1963), who loved horses and never married, working as paid companion 'to a series of old ladies' (Keefler-Kinch, extr. publ. in Chris Newman's Website);  and finally, [5] Reginald Noble Newman (1889-1964), who 'went to AMERICA with the proceeds of his granny's farm' (Seth Matterson, grandson, 2007, in letter to Chris Newman, extr. publ. on his Website).  He was the third Newman to have had dreams of America, the second to have actually ended up living there.  Reginald m. Mary Ambrose LOVE of Hawaii, settling down I believe nr. Santa Cruz in CALIFORNIA.  According to Claude, he had 'six children' in the States, but his grandson Seth knows of only one, his mother- only child of Mary nee Love.  He took with him, as well as his 'granny's' [mother's?] farm money, the 'Newman seal' of very considerable antiquity.  Claude said of him that 'if he ever comes back, give him five pound and send him on his way...!' (Heather Cuthbertson, gr-daur. of Claude, 2003; extr. of letter publ. by Chris Newman on his Website).

Violet Sherston Newman married Commander Arthur Gordon 'Bunny' KINCH, D.S.O. in 1927 (?) and had her honeymoon aboard a paddlesteamer on the TIGRIS, where in 1919 she had worked as a British Army nurse.  The couple spent much of their early marriage together in Mesopotamia, living in India during World War II and until partition in 1947, before retiring to Barnstaple.  Violet d. 19.11.1965, and was buried in HAWKRIDGE cemetery, the parish having the closest connection with her family (cf. notes/ Kathleen Keefler-Kinch & John Newman, desc. of Claude).

I am indebted to Chris for these superb photographs published on his Website.

5.  Seal used by Newmans of Nth. Cadbury

Newman Seal, 18th C- fr. Seth Matherson, gr.son of Reginald

I believe the seal is incorrect and a curious alteration has been made, since a 'martlet' has no legs.  Perhaps its owners, of the Cadbury line, had misplaced aspirations to permanency.
