BABY FOOD RECIPES

HOMEMADE APPLE or PEARSAUCE

6 medium apples or pears, scrubbed, cored and thickly sliced

Steam apples until fork tender.  Let cool slightly, then scrape apple away from the skin.  (Cooking with skin on helps retain nutrients)  Puree in food processor, using cooking liquid as needed to achieve the right consistency for your baby's age and preference.  Pears may not need any additional liquid.  Yields about 3 cups.  Can be refrigerated for 2 days; frozen for 3 weeks.

BANANA AVOCADO BLEND

Rich in potassium, bananas are usually a favorite with babies.  Avocado's have been called "natures finest baby food" because of the high content of DHA, a fatty acid essential for brain growth and development.

1/2 small ripe banana

1/2 very ripe avocado, pitted

Simply mash the two together in a small bowl.  If your baby prefers very smooth food, you may wish to add a small amount of expressed breast milk or yogurt.  Serve immediately, discarding any leftovers (or enjoy them yourself!).  This also makes a delicious topping for waffles, rice cakes or graham crackers for toddlers.

APPLES, CARROTS, CHICKEN & ONIONS

1 teaspoon safflower or other light veggie oil

1 medium onion, peeled and sliced thinly

1 apple, peeled, cored, and sliced thinly

2 carrots, peeled, trimmed, and sliced thinly

1/4 cup water

2 poached chicken breast halves

Brown onions with oil over medium-low heat for 15 minutes.  Add apples, carrots, and water, cover and continue cooking at medium-low for 10-15 minutes or until very tender.  Add poached chicken.  Set aside to slightly cool, then puree in food processor.  Yields about 2 cups.  Can be refrigerated for 3 days; frozen for 3 weeks.
