**NOTE if you do NOT have your firearms permit and require the Safety Class the Webmaster has a friend that teaches the course.
IMPORTANT: The department webmaster is NOT a recruiting officer or a training officer. Any emails received by him will be immediately deleted. This will take effect 7/31/2008.
Application requirements
Must Posess a high school diploma and valid Massachusetts Drivers License
You MUST be 21 years old, a copy of your birth certificate is required
You MUST be a legal US Citizen
It is reccomended that you reside within the Town of Winthrop, Ma. Non-resident applications can be considered on a person by person basis. The ability to quickly respond to the station is essential. The preferred response time is approximately 20 minutes
You MUST NOT have a felony conviction, or any conviction of a crime that would prevent said applicant from being appointed to the department or being issued a license to carry a firearm within the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
**MUST have a valid license to carry firearms for the protection of life and property or for all lawful purposes. Said license must be issued by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Those not wishing to carry a firearm will be assigned as a dispatcher. But must still be able to obtain said license.
Persons holding an appointment as a Police officer (Permanent, Intermittent, Reserve, Temporary, Seasonal, Campus, or Special) may NOT at any time hold an appointment to the department. Upon appointment to such office Auxiliary officers MUST submit their resignation to the department. Members appointed to the Winthrop Auxiliary Police may not hold appointment to any other auxiliary police department.
Must be in good physical condition, with no physical defects, or infirmities which would affect the proper discharge of duties and responsabilities of an Auxiliary Police officer. Also must be available for training as may be specified by the department.
Must be of sound mind and character. Must have the ability to maintain self-control and sound judgement under stressful situations. You will provide appropriate character references as may be determined by the department.
Must have the ability to analyze information, and evidence, and write clear and concise reports of observations and findings.
Must have the ability to work with people from various ethnic and religious backgrounds and of all economic levels within society.
Must have the ability to follow orders and directives of officers of a superior rank. You will be given a copy of the department policy and guidelines and you will adhere to said policies and guidelines, as well as all standing orders that may be issued from time to time. Violation of the policy and guidelines as well as any standing orders, may cause disciplinary action to be taken against you, up to and including dismissal from the department.
Must be able to excercise good judgement in the event that you are required to work with little or no supervision.
Must understand that when off duty, you as an auxiliary police officer may be subject to duty as needed. They may also be subject to emergency stand-by or emergency assignment to duty as deemed necessary. This may occur at any time of the day or night with or without any advance notice. 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 Days a year...holidays included
It is understood that your services to the Town of Winthrop as an Auxiliary Police officer is totally voluntary. It is understood that, at all times, your responsibility to your job and family are ahead of your obligations to the Town of Winthrop as a member of the Auxiliary Police Department.
You must also understand that at certain times you may be asked to use your own vehicle, if you do it is to be properly registered, and insured. The use of permanent mount blue lights is not advised, nor is it legal in the commonwealth of massachusetts for you to do so without proper permits. The Town is not responsible for any damage done to your vehicle while performing your duties as an auxiliary officer, and it is also very possible that if your vehicle is damaged that your insurance will NOT cover it, so do so at your own risk.
Must be aware that the WAPD, WPD, and the Town of Winthrop do not provide Health, injury, death or disability insurance to any Auxiliary Officers.
