Fish Stories from Tom's Bait
Friday, 14 May 2004
Seaworms are the perfect bait....
for all the schoolies filling the Saugus River. Nearly every spot along the river is seeing a run on schoolie stripers.
There have been reports of legal-sized keepers, but we haven't laid eyes on them yet!

Flounder fishing is slow, while cod fishing is active. There are lots of cod around, especially along Collin's Ledge, but no reports of any good size.

As for the freshwater side, we had one customer pull a 3.5 pound large-mouth bass from Brown's Pond this week. Golden Hills' fishermen are seeing some busy weekends, some pulling in as many as 10-20 fish. (Thankfully, they catch and release!)

Update for April 25 - Schoolie stripers in the Saugus River
Reports are coming in that schoolies are being caught all along the Saugus River: off Vitale Park and even near Spud's. Those fishing along Route 107 have been hitting the winter flounder and are also seeing the schoolies coming in.
Perfect for kids looking to get a taste of fishing, or for those of us who need some signs that spring is on the way!!

As for freshwater, salmon eggs are the bait to use for trout this year. Fishermen at Golden Hills say nothing else can compare to the results!

This week's fish....
Mood:  a-ok
See what you're missing?! Andrew Holland grabbed this one at Vitale Park, using herring. The fish weighed 19 pounds and was 40 inches long.

Danny Buck caught two big ones in a row. The larger of the two... this 36-incher weighed 17 pounds. He caught it off Revere using a 9-er rig.

And Artie Viveiros is leading this month's striper tournament from shore, with this 38.5 inch fish, weighing 17 pounds. His spot? Deer Island.

What did you catch lately? Drop us a line with details... tom@tomsbait.com

The fish are there - where are you??
The blues are in - at Point of Pines in Revere people are catching small blues with larger ones spotted off Graves.

Surf fishermen are pulling in stripers all day long behind Spud's and on the pier behind Building 19 off Route 1A.

If you can find a place to park, Nahant is full of local hot spots for stripers.

Let us know how you're doing - and where you're hooking up!

Broad Sound Tuna Club Striper Tournament - WASN'T a washout!
Mood:  lucky
Despite Sunday's downpours, the weekend wasn't a washout for the Broad Sound Tuna Club.
The club's annual striper tournament was still a success!

Beautiful fish were brought in as late at 4:30 p.m. Sunday night.

The winners were:

Lloyd from the Rachel Dawn took first place with a 30.15 pound fish.
Second place went to Darren DeNucci, who netted a 28.93 pound striper off the boat "Hookin Up."
John Jones took third place with a 26.5 pound fish, on the Sandalfoot.
Tommy Batch took fourth place with a 26.16 on the Blue Boat.

In the junior division, a familiar face took home first place.
Josh Webster caught a 14.31 pound fish on Saturday, off the Seadog.
Anthony Marchetti Jr. earned second place spot, with a 13.61 pound fish, and Justin O'Neil, also on the Seadog, took home third place with a fish weighing 12.5.

The youth division was topped by DJ of the Full House with a 17.52-pound striper.
Second place was Matt McLaughlin on the Misty, with a 17.26-pound fish. Chris Muise took third place on the Mi-Ann, reeling in a 16.21-pounder.

Tom's Bait and Tackle joined with many other local businesses to help sponsor and support the tournament. Tom served as official weighmaster, checking in every fish caught.
