What does a Teched computer need to have?

A student computer in Teched needs to have a consistent setup to help ensure consistent and productive use in class.  Each machine needs to have the proper software and hardware.  The software must be configured properly so that students can spend their time working on their projects instead of fighting with the settings on the computer.  All of the software for this setup should be saved onto a series of cd's so that installation can be done without a network connection.  The configuration for other departments and uses in the school will be different in some ways, similar and others.

Below is criteria for this setup:
Lan connection - configured to access the intranet, correct IP address, correct Network Neighborhood name
Web Browser - Internet Explorer, Netscape, Mozilla - all preferences set to operate on the system
Cute FTP - preferences set to be used to access the Teched server
ProDesktop - Installed, set to save files to student folder
DataCad - Version 9 or 8.  The software should be installed complete, not typical.  Save to student folder.
Lego RoboLab - set to access tower, set to save files to student folder
Basic Stamp - set to use com port, set to save files to student folder
Robix - set to run rascal software, uses printer port, saves to student folder, should not search for interface at startup.
Microsoft office - Word, Powerpoint, Excel, (Outlook should not be installed)

Windows:
95 on Pentium 1 machines
98 or higher on newer machines
Windows logon should make use of proxy server: duxburyps
Desktop - shortcuts for all applications listed above, short cut to student folder (located: c:/StudentFolder), show hidden files, show file extensions, desktop displayed as windows standard

Hardware:
Ram - as much as it can use
Hard drive -  as big as it can use
Keyboard - properly working
Mouse - properly working
Lego tower - installed to serial port, configured to com 2, working

Documentation:
Each computer that is configured as above needs to have paperwork that is accessible.  There should be a configuration sheet on the side of the case or front of the case that says what is on the machine.  As the configuration changes, the data needs to be updated in an electronic copy, printed, put on the case..  This electronic configuration data should be accessible from other computers on the intranet via a web browser and maybe ftp.  Another location for the configuration data could be a three ring binder with one sheet (section) on each computer.

Student documentation:
You will need to document what you have done to make this computer work properly.  Each time you set up a computer like this, you will encounter new ideas, problems and solutions.  Depending on where you are in the semester, you will have either more or fewer problems accomplishing this challenge.  These should be included in your documentation on your website.  Use text, photos, software and links to explain your process in solving this problem.
