Notes for JOHN C. SINCLAIR:
Information came from www.genforum.com
1) I am looking for information on Neill Sinclair (est1794-1880) and his descendants. I believe he came from Scotland to North Carolina as a child (1804) and married Catherine McMillan in Cumberland Co., NC (4/25/1821). Children, all born Robeson Co., NC: John (Calvin?); Duncan; Isabella; Mary; Thomas; Elizabeth; Catherine; Flora; Margaret.
John C. Sinclair married Elizabeth McNeill (3/18/1843) and had children: Neill A.; David MN(McNeill?); Zachariah; Joseph MN; WS (Winfield Scott?); Peter; Duncan.
WS "Scott" Sinclair (b1842-50/d1997) married Sarah Jane Tyre in Wayne Co., GA and had children: Isham C.; James Lee; Elizabeth; Duncan Winfield; Nolan S.; Lizzie.
Isham Sinclair married Lula Jane Murray in Pierce Co., GA and had children: Scott Franklin; Alma Lea; Effie; Arlie Isam; Eula; James Lester.
My grandmother and I would GREATLY appreciate any information about this family tree. I have more information and would gladly share.
This message is posted as a correction to my original query of September 3, 1998:
2) Looking for information on John Sinclair, Sr. and his descendants. He was born 8 October 1777 in Scotland (Glen Orchy?) and moved to Robeson County, North Carolina before August of 1820. He was married to Nancy LN? and father of John C. (1820-1885), Christian (1822-1891), Peter (1824-after 1880), Duncan M. (1827-1864) and possibly, Archibald (1812-?).
John Sinclair, Sr. may have been the son of Duncan and Christine Sinclair (married 16 December 1757, Inverary, Argyll, Scotland). He may have had a brother Archibald, christened 15 March 1774.
More information to share - any help greatly appreciated!

3) John C. Sinclair, born 26 August 1820 and died 16 July 1885, in Robeson County, North Carolina. Married Elizabeth McNeill on 18 March 1843. John was NOT the son of Neill Sinclair and Catherine McMillan. He was the son of John Sinclair, Sr. who lived next door to him in the 1850 Robeson County census. Proof of this lineage was found in land deeds:
!DEED: Robeson, NC Deed Book Z:69 (FHL #549479) John Sinclair, Sr. to John C. Sinclair (19 Oct 1844) "...John Sinclair as will for and in consideration of the natural love and affection which he hath and beareth to the said John C. Sinclair his son as also for the better maintenance and preferment of the said John..." 150 acres on both sides of Goodson's branch, orginally patented as 34,300 ac to David Allison in 1795, then auctioned for taxes in 1796 to Robert Haills, then to Burton Porter, then to Hugh Carmichael and by Carmichael to John Sinclair (See Deed Bk T:56 dated 1821).
Winfield Scott Sinclair, the son of John C. Sinclair and Elizabeth McNeill, was born 8 June 1849 in Robeson County, NC. He married Sarah Jane TYRE about 1879 in Georgia. I have exact dates of birth for their children from an Ancestral File entry. Ancestral File is a database that can be accessed through www.familysearch.com.
5) My Sinclair database has the 1850 Roberson Co, NC census information on a Neil Sinclair which shows that he came from Glasgow to Wilmington NC in 1804. He was born 1794 in Tarbert, Kintyre, Argyllshire, Scotland and died 18 Aug 1880 in Robeson Co, NC. Married Catherine McMillan , born abt 1800 in Cumberland Co, NC. They had nine children, Duncan, John C., Isabella, Mary, Thomas, Elizabeth, Catherine, Flora, and Margaret. All born between 1823 and 1843 probably, I have no further information, would like to have any you care to share to add to my database.
Children of JOHN SINCLAIR and ELIZABETH MCNEIL are:
3. i. WINFIELD SCOTT3 SINCLAIR, b. June 08, 1849, Robeson county, North Carolina; d. November 09, 1897, Wayne county, Georgia.
ii. ZACHARY TAYLOR SINCLAIR.

Christine,
I just saw your Sinclair information at RootsWeb.com. My ancestor is Zachary Taylor Sinclair, brother to your Winfield Scott Sinclair. My line from John Sinclair Sr. and wife Nancy remained in Robeson County, NC. Zachary's brothers moved to GA to follow the turpentine trade.
Two cousins and I have been working on our Sinclair history for several years. We have more on our McNeill family as well. Would love to share information on our Sinclair ancestors!

Her name as Harriet Elizabeth Sinclair Wilson Bunkley was given to me by her granddaughter in law Shay Turner. She states that she went by Bertha/Bertie.

I have a Minah MURRAY, daughter of Franklin M. MURRAY and Sarah KERSEY. My notes say that she married John COLEMAN, son of Asa COLEMAN and Caroline STRICKLAND, but I'll have to look for more information and a source to be certain. Two of Minah's sisters married SINCLAIRs, from whom I am descended. (Lula Jane MURRAY married Isham C. SINCLAIR, and Sindia MURRAY married James Lee SINCLAIR)
Interestingly, Richard Washington BUNKLEY (who married first Miriam WESTBERRY - I've seen that reference, too, only I thought Minah and Miriam were separate people) married second Bertha Elizabeth SINCLAIR WILSON (yes, widow of James Andrew WILSON). Bertie was sister to Isham and James SINCLAIR, above.
I have a contact whose husband is a descendant of Richard Washington BUNKLEY and Bertie. I'll forward your info to her - maybe she can shed some light on Miriam WESTBERRY.
What a nice surprise to receive from you the picture which might be Bertha (or Miriam)! I have only a physical description of Bertha from my grandmother. Mama said that Bertha (Aunt Bertie to her) had dark eyes and hair and pretty white teeth. She was tall. Family stories say that she was full of devilment as a child and much petted by her father. She was "sporty" or "progressive" compared to her other relatives, returning from New York with "city ways." I will also ask her if she remembers anything about Richard W. Bunkley having been married before his marriage to Bertha. Personally, I'm inclined to think the picture might be Bertha just because Miriam would have had to have been dead by about 1909 at about age 35 according to your birthdate for her, and the woman in the picture looks older than that to me.
Just a minute to let you know that my grandmother, who I had hoped would be able to identify the picture of Bertha/Miriam, could not say for certain that it was or was not Bertha. She said it might be, but that she had not seen Bertha as an older woman. She also knew nothing of Richard Bunkley having been married before his marriage to Bertha. Oh well. It would have been so nice and neat, but...of course, this isn't conclusive either way. Mama, bless her heart, is very sharp for 96, but she is 96, after all, and has a right to forget things.
These records, added to my grandmother's recollections, lead me to believe that this Jane is in fact my headstrong young Sarah Jane Tyre, although she would have been only 15 if this is true. They apparently had a daughter, ?Dilly? about 1877 who died at age 3, and a son, Willie Mershon ("Shon") Westberry, who was perhaps a midget or just small and perhaps mentally slow (1/17/1879-4/14/1956; his funeral home record says his father was Knightington Westberry). Nighton Westberry was said to have abandoned her, running away with another woman before the 1880 federal census. I found a Wayne Co. Superior Court record in which Nighton Westberry was charged with gaming 3/5/1885, and a marriage record for him to Delila Screws in Tatnall Co., GA 7/3/1886. He must have been quite a winner. Then he turns around and names his daughter by Delila Sarah Jane?! It seems strange to me that Sarah would have allowed her daughter Bertha to marry Richard Bunkley, whose first wife was Nighton's illegitimate child, Miriam. Such a tangle! By the way, I have that Bertha was born 7/4/1886. Not that that makes any difference for your comment about William Bunkley not being her son.
