Christine here goes. In The Georgia Genealogical Magazine Vos. 30-42; 1971 under The 1783 Spanish Census of Florida; Photostat # 49: Robert Whitmore: Native of North Carolina, avails, by writing, of the Spanish protection to make himself a Spanish subject, he has a wife and one son, occupation farmer, he has seven acres of land with his house on it, which he inhabits and cultivates, in Talbot Island, 10 miles from The Bluff on the St. John's River.
William Warrantine: Native of Virginnia, he avails, by writing, of the Spanish protection to make himself a Spanish subject with his son in law, the last named WHITMORE, with whom he lives, he has eight acres of land on the shore of The Bluff on the St. John's River.
So Robert Whitmore's first wifes last name was Warrantine. In 1784 Robert Whitmore married Maria Dolores Pierce. I'm not sure here if Robert had another child, a daughter or he had the daughter with Maria Pierce. Well Robert Whitmore died and Maria Dolores Pierce married a Anastacio Mabrumati whos wife also died leaving 5 children to raise. Here I will not sate all the Spanish Land Grant writing just what I need to point out for you. I do have all of the writing ! Spanish Land Grants in florida: Con. W22; DGV 376, 379 -- Whitmore, Robert, Heirs statment said: #5 (E) Joseph Hagens ( my wifes ggg grandfather) desposes before W.H> Allen, 5/11/1827 that after the death of Robert White the land was in the possession of Anastasio Mabrumaty, in trust for the heirs of said Whitmore until the 1812 revolution, and that, after the death of Mabrumaty, Daniel Brockington took possession of the land for said heirs and still retains it. Entry # ^ (E) Unfinished plat of 300 acres, being in sec. 46; T.3; r 27 S&E, for Robert Whitmore.
Under Spanish Land Grants
Brockington, Daniel Unc. B-21; G&S IV 412 ! (E) claims, "in right of his wife, Harriet Whitmore," 200 acres, more or less, on Goodby's Lake, next to the lands of William Hollingsworth. Issac N. Cox, attorney, signs. (on jacket of dossier; " Report 13, no. 2-- 1828.")
Christine I'm sending off for copys of the dossier and Report 13. no. 2--1828 now. I do not know the name of Roberts son but will keep looking ! I thank Maria and Robert Whitmore had the daughter. Also I think that Daniel Brockington who was born bet. 1790 in South Carolina and lived in Camden county George wifes name is Harriet Whitmore ! Do you know anything about Robert Whitmores son ?

Hello, I recently found your genealogy website while searching for information on Martha Brockington. Thank you for all you have. It will take me a while to sort through all your information, and I'm excited about it. I was wondering if you have the information for Nahum Littlefield and Daniel Brockington in a GEDCOM file that I could have? I also noticed that Daniel Brockington (b. abt. 1750 SC) has ancestors listed (Daniel Brockington and William Brockington) but I couldn't find anything on your website about them. Do you have info regarding them? You could put me on the cousins list if you would like. My email is kristi@byu.edu. Martha Brockington was my g-g-grandmother. I'm excited to find information on this side of the family. Thanks again, Kristi Perkins
Hello, I was looking at your genealogy of Daniel Brockington, and I noticed a mistake I'd like to correct. In Generation 5, Martha Brockington (#12) had a child named Daniel Brockington Wilson. You have his death date listed at March 13, 1971. That is incorrect. His tombstone does list that as his death date, but his daughter, in her grief, ordered it wrong. His death certificate correctly states his death date at March 1, 1971. His daughter (my great-aunt) decided not to get it corrected. Hope this helps.
Thanks again for the information on your website. Kristi Perkins

He married twice. He married Margaret Alford in Brunswick, Glynn, Ga, 26 October 1848. Margaret was born in Georgia 1830. She was the daughter of James Alford. Margaret died about 1851 in Camden, Georgia. He married Martha Brockington in Camden, Ga, 1851. Martha was born about 1828. She was the daughter of Samuel H. Brockington and Courtney A.E. Carnes. Martha died in St Marys, Camden, Georgia. Martha died in St Marys, Camden, Georgia. William was a lighthouse keeper for the Little Cumberland Island Lighthouse from 23 Oct 1854 through 30 June 1857. (Federal Register of Lighthouse Keepers, National Archives, M1373, p335 ) His annual salary was $400. Each lighhouse keeper was furnished a house. Matches, wicks for the lamps, chamois skins and linen towels for cleaning the shades, brooms and mops were supplied. Guests climbed the lighthouse stairs but no one except the attendant was allowed in the lighthouse tower itself. Life on the Little Cumbeland Island was delightful. (according to Mrs. Lancaster who was born 22 July 1896 on Little Cumberland while her father Allen M. Strickland was the Keeper). Hand seines brought in many fish, crabs and shrimp which wre cooked outside for the enjoyment of summer visitors. The islanders gathered loggerhead turtle eggs -- which were plentiful at that time -- collecting them when the turtles came out of the water and made their nests on the sandy beaches. The children climbed the dunes, collected driftwood, and often picked up timbers washed ashore from wrecked ships. Mrs. Lancaster's memories are confirmed by Robert H. Frohock, one time assistant keeper of the lighthouse (and brother in law or cousin to the William H. Spaulding). The lighthouse was decommissioned in 1913. (Per an oral history taken by the Camden County Historical Society (Mrs. Catherine Stickland Lancaster)
William is also listed as a carpenter in the census records from 1840 to 1900 and a pilot.
Little Cumberland Island, lies north of and adjacent to Cumberland, set apart as a distinct island separated from Cumberland by the waters of Christmas Creek. As a note, the Spaulding home was along Christmas Creek. Per the book titled "Cumberland Island, A Challenge in the Golden Isles" , published June 1966, Little Cumberland is reported as being an island of 2,200 (upland) acres. In the original grant to James Habersham dated 6 Jan 1767, it is described as "an island of 1400 acres known by the name of Litle Cumberland and bounded on the north and east by Sea Beach, south by an inlet, marshes and creeks of the smae, and west by marshes and creeks leading therefrom." (Camden County Grant Book F, page 22) At one time Little Cumberland was owned by General Nathaniel Greene (see Camden County Deed Book G, page 476) The land was sold to John Floyd and Charles Floyd by the Greene heirs on May 25, 1808.
A letter of commendation was given to William H. Spaulding by President Buchanan in 1867 for his actions during the Civil War. William H. Spaulding, dismounted the Lighthouse lense and turned it over to the U.S. Navy. Involved in this action was his brother in law, James Clubb and his brother Edmund Spaulding. 15 vi. William R. Spaulding was born 1862. William died in Charleton, Ga. He married Mary Ann Ribron in St Marys, Camden, Georgia, 25 Jan 1881. Mary was born in Cumberland Island, Camden, Ga 1867. She was the daughter of Francis Ribron and Mary Miller. History of Charleton Co, By Alex McQueen 1978. page 87, published in 1889, reprinted in 1932 and again in 1978. re Floyd's Island: "Dr. Dan Hebard, prinicipal owner of the swamp, has recently erected a hunting lodge on this island where he spends a few weeks during the winter season shooting ducks on the near-by ponds. The swamp is full of prairies, and is also the lonely, isolated home of Uncle Billy Spaulding. This old man, approximately 70 years of age, lives all alone on ths island except the short time spent there in the winter by Mr. Hebard and his friends. Uncile Billie is the care taker ad lives entirely alone, cultivating a garden, raisng chickens, hunting, fishing, and trapping. He is, without doubt, the most isolated human within the confines of the entire State of Georgia, and, at times, it is weeks when he does not see a human being. He is apparently, satisfied and happy, and is a favorite omong visiting hunters and fishermen who occassionally visit this lonely and isolated island." I have a picture of Uncle Billie and my mother, she's about 16 years old, in Brunswick. Uncle Billy had come into town for a rare visit with the family. He and my Grandmother, Annie Green Spaulding had a difference of opinion on how to raise corn. Seems Uncle Billie, thinking to "gift her" with something had planted some corn in her patch. BUT, it was popping corn and according to my mother, corn will cross pollinate and it made Grandma's entire patch of corn inedible that year!! Mother recalls that Uncle Billie married Mary Ribron and they had moved to or near Atlanta, Ga. Either Mary died or she and Uncle Billie had a "falling out" and he then moved to the Swamp where he lived as a recluse for the rest of his years.

Hi Christine, Dorothy Pittman said you might be able to help me. My grandfather was William R. Spaulding. His wife, (which
I can not find a record of marriage) was Rachael Taylor. Her mother was Prudence Altman and father was James Taylor. Prudence was Cherokee. In 1838 she was 6 years old and during the "Trail of Tears" she hid in a wood pile and non indian neighbors got her safely away. I believe she went to Georgia and was raised by the Altmans. I have found her on only one census which said she was born in South Carolina. I can't find her on any census before her marriage. Do you think there is any hope of finding her?
Hi Christine, Thanks so much for this info. It is more help than you'll ever know. There was no info on the research in Camden and Glynn County that my grandfather was married to my grandmother. I was beginning to wonder. In the 1920's there was an article written about the grandfather, William R. Spaulding. He lived in the Ofeenokee Swamp. The article called him "The Loneliest Man in Georgia" No mention of the wife and 8 kids at home. The article also ran in the Jacksonville paper. If you find anything on Prudence please let me know. Thanks so much for your help.
I've e-mailed Susan. Her grandfather was the twin brother of mine (William). I knew about Mary Riberon or at least I found out about her from Susan. Susan didn't know about Rachael. William and Rachael had 8 children. My grand-father went to live in the swamp because he couldn't stand all the fighting between all the women in the house. It could possibly be a common law marriage. I just don't know, and there isn't anyone in the family that I can ask. I know that Susan's grandfather knew all about Rachael and all the children because I remember when I was a teenager we visited Walter and his wife, they had been married for 75 years.

NOTE: It is not yet proven that Caroline Brockington above is the wife of William W. Bunkley. I have been unable to find a marriage for William W. Bunkley and this Caroline A. ?. I searched the Camden and Glynn county area in census records to find the best possible match to William's wife. Also a daughter of William and Caroline ?, was Susie, she was listed as a cousin of Henry Crum in 1880. After researching the Crum family it lead to the conclusion that Caroline was a Brockington. This still needs to be proven.
NOTE: messange posted by Jenny Brockington Lovell on www.ancestry.com
A Capt. Sam Brockinton lived on St. Simons Island that was owner of some shrimp boats, I believe. I met him when I worked at Gibson Pharmacy from 1968-1972. We talked quite a bit. He said we were all related but that a few generations prior, they had dropped the "g" out of Brockington. He also had a brother that lived on St. Simons also. My family lived at Waverly, GA and all my dads ancestors for I believe 2-3 generations before him are buried at Horse Stamp Cemetary at Waverly.
I can't remember, were you a Brockington?
I pulled up someting on internet that had a few errors on it but I will have to look at it again and let one of my older brothers or sisters help me before I notify the person that pulled this information together.

(since this is the only William old enough and missing in 1880 to conclude that Caroline must have died or been killed and William was sent to prison, which would explain why the children were parcelled out to other families.)

Notes (from Jimmy H. Collins, grandson of Richard Bunkley)
Miriam Westberry was a long time member of the Piney Grove Church of God in Jesup.
Per Charles Westberry, the leader Westberry family researcher. He states that she was listed as Ellen Westberry on the death certificate of her daughter (it does not mention which daughter).
NOTE: Miram is not yet proven to be a daughter of Asa Coleman and Caroline Strickland. There is a lot of mystery about her parents. Some say that she is the daughter of Rabon Westberry and the widow Caroline Coleman. There was a marriage license issued to them in 1876, but I have yet to find proof of an actual marriage. Caroline is listed in the 1880 and 1910 census as Caroline Coleman, widow. She is also buried as Caroline Coleman. One Westberry researcher (Charles Westberry) believes that Caroline (Strickland) Coleman and Knighten (aka Rabon) Westberry s/o Rabon and Celisia Westberry had an affair and it produced a child, Miriam. Which was attempted to be covered up by a marriage attempt and using his fathers name. Also one source says that Rabon and Caroline did marry and they had one SON, Marion. This is the same way of spelling that has been applied to my ancester, Miriam/ Marion Coleman/Westberry.
Knighen is said to be a mean and scoundrel of a man. He married first to Sarah Jane Tyre in April 1874 and left her after their third child was born. They were later divorced and she married Winfield Scott Sinclair (they are the parents of Bertha Sinclair, second wife of Richard Bunkley). Knighten married Delia (Sarah) Screws in 1886. It could be possible that he left Sarah to be with Caroline, who gave birth to a girl, Miriam in August 1874. There is a Asa Westberry, who is said to be the half brother of the children of Knighten and Sarah Tyre Westberry. He was born about 1880. Possibly another child by Caroline or by another woman. Miriam was born only 4 months after the marriage of Sarah Tyre and Nighten. This gives me the impression that he was trying to mend his ways or settle down. Maybe he attempted to marry Caroline anyway, which didn't work so he left his current wife.
I have a picture of Richard Bunkley and one of his wives. The family says that it is Bertha Sinclair, his second wife. But when setting this picture next to a picture of Ruby Bunkley, granddaughter of Miriam by Richard, they are identical in facial features. This would not be the case if the picture was of Bertha. I have also seen a picture of Rabon and his father Knighten Westberry and the woman looks alot like them. I am becoming convinced that Miriam is the illegitimate daughter of a desc of Rabon Westberry Sr. The most probably choice is Knighten Westberry, s/o Rabon and Celisia Strickland
(Per email with Charles Westberry)
Christine, Hi.
I am now firmly convinced that Knighten was the father of Miriam. I put the pix you sent me side by side and she looks enough like Rabon, son of Knighten, to be his sister. I intend to use that photo to touch up Rabon's features with. This part is so screwed up with the coverups and hiding and all. I am in Jax, Fla., visiting my brother. Will be here til next May or so. I found Kenneth Ralph Westberry here. He descends from that group we are talking about. His mom has a pix of Daniel Webster Westberry, whom Maggie Bunkley married. Am trying to get a copy. Will share if I get it. Charles
Email from Charles Westberry
Got some info firsthand, confirming my belief on Knighten and Miriam.
I got an expense paid trip in SE Georgia over the Christmas Holidays in thanks for work on the Westberry family. Hit the cemeteries in Vidalia/Lyons and in the Jesup area.
I went and talked to Rabon Wesberry, son of Asa-Acy- Westberry, (notice, no 'T' in Rabon's name.) Rabon and his wife swear and showed me the death info on Asa that his mother was SARAH Screws, not Deliah-Lila-Lillian. As said before, Asa said he was a half-sibling to the others.
Sarah musta been Lilas sister. (Deliah Screws)
Rabon Wesberry looks like he is a twin of Miriam. That is how close the resemblence is.
I am convinced that Knightens name was Rabon Knighten Westberry. Look at the census info and put it together with the data that his descendants have supplied. I stand on that, the same as Knighten being the father of Miriam.
At Piney Grove Church Cemetery, buried there are John W. Westberry and wife, son of Rabun Westberry, CSA. Also, Lillian Westberry, wife of ole man Knighten, but the dates are wrong on her stone. It shows her being born in 1848 whereas the census records keep her birth in the early 1860s. Also is the last child of Knighten, Rabon Westberry, born abt 1896, d. 1938, buried beside his mom.
The kicker is, Sarah Jane Westberry, daughter of Knighten and Lila, was not his daughter, but his step-daughter, child of Lilas first husband, Mans Bell. Same holds for Susan.
Sarah is buried beside Lillian-Lila-, as Sarah Bell Oliver. Same dates as Sarah Westberry. Sarah married Boss Oliver. Had some youngins, but they not being blood related, I will not post them. If you want them, let me know.

I have a Minah MURRAY, daughter of Franklin M. MURRAY and Sarah KERSEY. My notes say that she married John COLEMAN, son of Asa COLEMAN and Caroline STRICKLAND, but I'll have to look for more information and a source to be certain. Two of Minah's sisters married SINCLAIRs, from whom I am descended. (Lula Jane MURRAY married Isham C. SINCLAIR, and Sindia MURRAY married James Lee SINCLAIR)
Interestingly, Richard Washington BUNKLEY (who married first Miriam WESTBERRY - I've seen that reference, too, only I thought Minah and Miriam were separate people) married second Bertha Elizabeth SINCLAIR WILSON (yes, widow of James Andrew WILSON). Bertie was sister to Isham and James SINCLAIR, above.
I have a contact whose husband is a descendant of Richard Washington BUNKLEY and Bertie. I'll forward your info to her - maybe she can shed some light on Miriam WESTBERRY.
What a nice surprise to receive from you the picture which might be Bertha (or Miriam)! I have only a physical description of Bertha from my grandmother. Mama said that Bertha (Aunt Bertie to her) had dark eyes and hair and pretty white teeth. She was tall. Family stories say that she was full of devilment as a child and much petted by her father. She was "sporty" or "progressive" compared to her other relatives, returning from New York with "city ways." I will also ask her if she remembers anything about Richard W. Bunkley having been married before his marriage to Bertha. Personally, I'm inclined to think the picture might be Bertha just because Miriam would have had to have been dead by about 1909 at about age 35 according to your birthdate for her, and the woman in the picture looks older than that to me.
Just a minute to let you know that my grandmother, who I had hoped would be able to identify the picture of Bertha/Miriam, could not say for certain that it was or was not Bertha. She said it might be, but that she had not seen Bertha as an older woman. She also knew nothing of Richard Bunkley having been married before his marriage to Bertha. Oh well. It would have been so nice and neat, but...of course, this isn't conclusive either way. Mama, bless her heart, is very sharp for 96, but she is 96, after all, and has a right to forget things.
These records, added to my grandmother's recollections, lead me to believe that this Jane is in fact my headstrong young Sarah Jane Tyre, although she would have been only 15 if this is true. They apparently had a daughter, ?Dilly? about 1877 who died at age 3, and a son, Willie Mershon ("Shon") Westberry, who was perhaps a midget or just small and perhaps mentally slow (1/17/1879-4/14/1956; his funeral home record says his father was Knightington Westberry). Nighton Westberry was said to have abandoned her, running away with another woman before the 1880 federal census. I found a Wayne Co. Superior Court record in which Nighton Westberry was charged with gaming 3/5/1885, and a marriage record for him to Delila Screws in Tatnall Co., GA 7/3/1886. He must have been quite a winner. Then he turns around and names his daughter by Delila Sarah Jane?! It seems strange to me that Sarah would have allowed her daughter Bertha to marry Richard Bunkley, whose first wife was Nighton's illegitimate child, Miriam. Such a tangle! By the way, I have that Bertha was born 7/4/1886. Not that that makes any difference for your comment about William Bunkley not being her son.

Notes for DANIEL BROCKINGTON WILSON:
SOURCE: Krisit Perkins kristi@byu.edu
I was looking at your genealogy of Daniel Brockington, and I noticed a mistake I'd like to correct.
