The Performances

After many weeks of rehearsals: it's show time!! Ê What do I have to do to get ready for the performances?

  • Well, make sure you bring all your necessary things from home. Costumes, shoes, socks, pantyhose, make-up, hair items, water and what ever else you need.

  • Pack these things ahead of time, have a light supper and get to the theatre for make-up call at 6:00 in the music room. Don't leave anything in the auditorium. Don't leave anything of value in the dressing room.

  • Make sure your costumes for the show are in the right places. There will be clothing racks back stage right and left.

  • You can use the bathrooms in the Early childhood wing. You can leave your clothes in the music room, the EC hallway or in the music hallway. Don't leave back packs and stuff back stage. Only the essentials.

  • Once you've moved all your stuff in, start getting your make-up on, hair done and costume on. Many times we have students helping with make-up and hair. We have plenty of make-up, but if you want you may use your own make-up and it would help us greatly if you could put your own make-up on. The same with hair- if you can do it yourself - great!

  • During this time of getting the actors ready, the technical director and stage manager along with their crews are getting the stage and house ready. They must make sure the set and props are all in the right place. The lighting crew must test the lights and cues, and the sound crew must make their appropriate tests of levels and microphones.

  • So as you can see, everyone is running around getting ready for the 8:00 curtain. Each person should take care of himself. Don't get caught up with fooling around. You should be getting focused and relaxed so you can do the best performance possible.

  • Usually at 7:30 or a half an hour before the show, the tech crew and actors come together in the music room to go over last minute notes, comments and traditions. We have crazy traditions that help us get energized for the show. They might seem strange at first, but they are fun, and it's a Tradition!!

  • At 7:55 the stage manager will call 5 minutes to places, and actors and crew get to their places. If there are people still coming in at 8:00 we might hold the curtain for 5 minutes. The stage manager will tell you what is happening. Just be ready and be in your place.

  • Once the lights go down...it's show time. Enjoy yourself! Hold for laughs and applauds. Make sure you make all your entrances on time. And have fun!

  • Make sure you are quiet back stage!

  • Do not stand in the wings unless you are preparing to make an entrance.

  • When walking from one side of the stage to the other from back stage, do so quietly!

  • Make sure you listen to the stage manager and art director! They are running the show!

  • During intermission, no one is allowed in the lobby. Everyone must stay back stage. No one can walk on the stage or look out in the audience. The only people that can go on stage will be the set crew if they are making any set changes during intermission.

  • Intermission usually lasts 15 minutes. The stage manager will notify you as to when you must be in place with a 5 minute warning, then a 2 minute warning.

  • Once the show is over, and curtain calls are finished, everyone exits the stage to the backstage area, then you may go out in the lobby to meet your family and friends. Do not jump off the stage!

  • After you have met your public, it is time to get packed-up and ready for the next show. You may leave your costumes in the music room or hang them on the racks back stage. But, know where you've left them. Actors must not leave their costumes lying around. The set crew is not your personal maid service. You are responsible for your own stuff. Clean up after yourselves, and when everyone is ready, you may leave.

  • The set crew must reset the show to the opening. All props must be put back to the opening of the show. Microphones should be secured. Then it's time to go, get a good night's sleep and do it again the next day!

  • After the last show of the run, everyone must stay to strike the set. Everyone is given a specific task that he must do. This could entail cleaning the music room, storing the costumes in the costume room, storing the props, storing set pieces, etc. Our strikes usually do not last longer than two hours. We break down everything, put it away, and clear the stage and back stage areas so that the theatre classes can be up and running Monday morning.
