Overview of Taxonomy

You might be asking yourself, "So what is taxonomy, anyway?" To say the definition in the simpliest way, it is the classification of living organisms These organisms are then classified into seven different levels of classification:

Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species

Binomial nomenclature is when you take the genus and species of an organism to give it a specific name. This classifies different organisms and makes each one unique. An example would be Homo sapien. The genus is capitalized and both words are generally in italics. Kingdom is the most broad area of classification. There are five kingdoms, which are located to your left. Click each one to learn more about them.
