History Of Same Sex Marriage

 

Same sex marriages are a recently new topic of discussion, meaning there is not a big history about the topic. However, this is a very controversial topic. In ways, this topic is very similar to Interracial Marriage. To see a comparison of the two, go Here

     The first time that recognizing of a same sex marriage was in the 1990’s. From this time on, this topic became an important gay rights issue. As of now, homosexuals are the only group of Americans who do not have the right to marry the person they love. Vermont is the only state which allows same sex marriages to happen legally.

     The Defense of Marriage Act is a recent law that has been created. There are two parts to it. 1) It lets states decide whether or not they want to allow same sex marriages and 2) it creates a federal definition for “marriage” and “spouse.” A summary of this law can be found Here. This law basically denies recognition of a same sex marriage.
