(the fireplace on the third floor)
The house (built in 1999) is a traditional shingle house (image) with contemporary simplicity and flair amidst warm and traditional touches.  It was designed as what is known on the islands as an 'upside down house' in order to be able to take advantage of the views of the Sengekontacket pond, Vineyard Sound and the Cape Cod shore that is visible over the treeline from the third floor living/dining/kitchen.

The theme of comfortable yet modern and simple is maintained throughout the house.  The house is filled with light as it rises over the treetops and the windows catch the sun all day long.  Though the windows resemble old style multilight windows, they are in fact double pane and insulated.  Hence the house is well insulated for those cold foggy days, unavoidable in fickle New England weather even midsummer.  The fireplace in the living area also provides a cheery way of warming up on those days when the rain keeps you indoors.  It was designed so that the fire is at eye level when seated and at the same level as the views framed by the wall of windows.

White walls and natural wood details throughout, including the rich ash floors found on the second and third floors contribute to the house's welcoming feel.  It is the kind of place that makes you want to take off your shoes and where you can instantly feel right at home.

Third Floor

The third floor is a dramatic cathedral ceilinged space that contains the living and dining areas in addition to the new modern kitchen.  A wall of windows opens to the views and numerous other windows bathe the space in light and allow the cool ocean breezes to flow through the house.  The kitchen though small is quite functional and all the appliances are of very high quality including a refrigerator with ice maker, a stove with ceramic cooktop and generously sized microwave oven.  The kitchen (image 1, image 2) is open to the room so that the cook or cooks will never feel lonely.  This level also has the fireplace and a half bath.
