Graduating Class December 2001

Our TGH winter class 2001 began on October 6, 2001 and lasted for ten weeks. Graduation took place on Thursday, December 20, 2001. Eleven graduating families then received a new computer 500 Mhz, 68 MB RAM, Windows 98, Microsoft Suite 2000, a color printer and Internet access for one year. The graduation program took place at 122 DeWitt Drive, Roxbury, Massachusetts and over 75 people attended the ceremony. The program presented the following: Music by: Michelle and Tiana Santos; Dance Performance by: Jewel Cash Van-Stokes; Poetic Reading by: Sheryl DeBarros and Success Testimonies by: Adult - Latoya Jackson and Youth - Harold Kirkland. The holiday spirit of giving was definitely in the air, since all the performances were done by our talented group of TGH Alumni. Thanks to the hard work of our families this was a graduation to be remembered.

The wonderful times we had in class.

The ten week 4 hour trainings were held on Saturday mornings. All eleven families enjoyed the training because it facilitated families the time to enjoy the training together. The curriculum also linked the materials taught to learn technology with information families felt was important to know. An example was our 15-minute typing assignment, which occurred for the first 15 minutes of class. Each family comes into class and is given the fact sheet of the day, which is the typing material for typing practice. The fact sheet presented facts on teenage pregnancy in our neighborhood; high-school drop out statistics in our neighborhood; Income median and cost of living for our neighborhood; Youth Opportunities in our neighborhood; After-school programs with specialized interest for people in our neighborhood; and a whole lot more. Because the class is an intergenerational learning both parent and child is then give another 15 minutes to complete a written assignment (typed) that talks about how the previous week played out for them.
