Below are some very basic definitions of terms that may be encountered within the Polyamorous community.

| Polyamory | The practice of having more than one love based relationship at one time. |
| Polyandry | The practice of having more than one husband at one time. |
| Polygamy | The practice of having more than one spouse at one time. |
| Polygyny | The practice of having more than one wife at one time. |
| BDSM | The generic term used to describe B/D, D/S & S/M play. |
| B/D | Bondage/Discipline |
| D/S | Domination/Submission |
| S/M | Sadism/Masochism |

| Heterosexual | Someone who is sexually oriented towards people of the opposite gender |
| Homosexual | Someone who is sexually oriented towards people of the same gender. |
| Gay | A person who is homosexual. |
| Lesbian | A homosexual woman |
| Bisexual | Someone who is sexually oriented towards people of both genders. |
| Pansexual | Encompassing all sexualities |
| Transvestite | A person who dresses and acts in a style or manner of the opposite gender |
| Transexual | One whose primary sexual identification is with the opposite gender. One who has undergone a sex change. |
