
Born in Floriana, Malta on 2nd March, 1943, he was educated at St. Edward’s College, Malta. After graduating from the Royal Military Acdemy, Sandhurst, he was commissioned in the Royal Malta Artillery (British Army) on 2nd August, 1963. Subsequently he attended courses at the School of Artillery at Larkhill and Manorbier in the United Kingdom in 1963/64.
Promoted to Lieutenant in 1965 and Captain in 1969, he served in the British Army of the Rhine (BAOR) in 1964/65 and 1967/68 as well as short tours in Libya and Cyprus. He was then commissioned in the Armed Forces of Malta, in the rank of Captain in 1970, when the Malta Government established its military force, following Independence in 1964. Promoted to Major in 1976, he was then promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in 1988 and Colonel in 1992. During his career he held appointments of Troop Commander, Assistant Adjutant, Unit Adjutant, Patrol Boat Section Officer (Maritime Squadron), Staff Officer Administration, Commanding Officer, Senior Staff Officer Administration and Logistics. He was appointed Principal Staff Officer in January 1992 and Deputy Commander in Febraury 1994. Brig. Montanaro was appointed Commander Armed Forces of Malta with his present rank on 12th December, 1996. He was member of the Malta delegation CSCE, Second Seminar on Military Doctrine (Vienna) in October 1991, of the Seminar on "Defence Planning in a Parliamentary Democracy" (Vienna) 1993, and AIAMs in 1994, 1995, and 1996. Attended a NATO Orientation Course for CSCE Signatory States at Oberammergau in October 1991. Between 1990 and 1996, he held the appointment of Registrar of the National Orders. His decorations include: Long & Efficient Service Medal; Commander of Infante Dom Henrique of the Portuguese Republic; Commendatore in the Ordine al Merito of the Italian Republic. Brig. Montanaro is married to Angela and they have a son and a daughter. His leisure interests include European History and silverware.
