Genghis Khan had only a few wagons to use as a base in which to make his decisions. Using original military tactics such as fire, explosives, and communication by flags and drumbeats, he marched his 10,000-man army from the Gobi desert well into Europe. Early in his life, Genghis was attacked by a group called the Taichi'ut. This misfortune forced him to prove his uncanny intelligence at a young age. He escaped and convinced a member of the group to hold off a search until morning so he could get farther away. He got as far as Konkirat, where he first met his wife, Borte. A group called Merkit later captured Borte, but Genghis again used his cunning to receive help from Konkirat's leader, Toghril, to get her back. Toghril and Genghis remained friends, and Genghis became somewhat of an understudy to the older leader.

Determined to complete Phillip II’s dream, Alexander invaded Persia in 334 BCE, sending in 35,000 men.
