Trivia: How many active languages are there in the world?

According to recent estimates, the number of actively spoken languages in the world today is around 6,000. More than 1,400 of those languages belong to the Niger-Congo family from Africa, and about 1,200 are in the Austronesian family from Madagascar, Indonesia, Australia, the Pacific Islands, and New Zealand. Most of today's active languages are spoken by very few people, and many of them are losing speakers rapidly as the world becomes more and more connected. Half of today's languages have fewer than 10,000 speakers, and a quarter have fewer than 1,000. Thousands of years ago, there may have been as many as 10,000 active languages in the world. Within the next century, thousands of languages may be lost.

Cool word: vocable [n., adj. VOE-kuh-bul]

If you look at a word as a sequence of sounds or syllables, without considering its meaning, then you are seeing that word as a vocable. Also, a word that is vocable is one that can be spoken. Example: "The vocable 'mama' seems like a natural sound for a baby's first word." Language has been a part of human culture for many millennia, and the words we use to describe words are very old. From the ancient root wek- came the Latin vox (voice) and vocare (to call). Those roots gave us a family of modern words having to do with voices, words, and language.

More "language" words from vox and vocare:

vocal: relating to the voice

voice: sound produced by the vocal cords

vocation: a regular occupation or calling

vocabulary: all the words known; all the words of a language

vociferous: prone to noisy vocal outbreaks

vocoder: device for producing artificial speech

A ton of things were left undone today.

I had planned to figure out what I’d purchased for gifts throughout the year. This was a big priority. I’m forever picking up things as I see them and tossing them in the Backroom-from-hell, so I have no idea what I might have already picked up with specific people in mind. I had really wanted to go through that stuff today.

Didn’t happen.

And it can only happen during daylight hours as I don’t turn on the heat in that room and it is way too cold to deal with at night.

Then there was the living room that I swore was going to get straightened out, and all those presents that I’ve dumped in here were going to get organized. As I boxed, wrapped and labeled. Did this happen?

Nope.

I started to work on it, but decided that I needed to go to the mall, to my brother’s house and to the bookstore instead.

That was a bit more productive. I returned the too-expensive sweater, bought the dress in a smaller size (I’ve yet to try it on to see if it fits), and found some slippers for my mother.

I went to my brother’s to read Matilda’s ed plan to make sure it was properly done and safe to sign. It was, so that was a relief. The only thing that irritated me about it was the fact that they didn’t complete it within the timeline specified by the state.

Things like that irritate me, as I always have to meet these deadlines, so I expect everyone else to do the same thing.

Then I went to the bookstore and got Rosemary Clooney’s autobiography for my mother. It got a great review and I thought it might be something she’d enjoy.

Besides I want to read it when she’s finished.

I was really good about not buying anything for myself while I was there, even though there was a book on stamping that I’d really like to get.

But first I have to get these presents bought!

When I got back home, I played with the computer, trying to get these graphics to work on Netscape.

I’d gotten all sorts of advice from the folks on journal-l, but nothing has worked. They seem to be as mystified about the whole thing as I am.

I really tried hard, too. It bums me out that Netscape can’t see my snowman border or elfbar.

I really like sites that use graphics – it’s the rubber stamper in me- and I hate that I can’t get mine to work!

Once again I’ll ask: Anyone want a Christmas card via snail mail? If you do just e-mail me your snail address and I’ll try to send one.

I’d really like to know who reads these pages and would like to send a card as a "thank you" for tuning in.
