I, being a member of the noble breed of Basenji (bah-sen-gee), have a long prestigious history. As it was passed down from generation to generation of Basenji royalty, this is the story of the Basenji: A long time ago in a continent far far away (Africa), we Basenjis were wild savage dogs, without servants or beds or room service or anything. We had to hunt for our food and sleep on the ground and in caves! To be specific, we were Jackals, big pointy dogs that can still be found in Africa today, still wild uncivilized beasts.
But a few of those primitive Jackals discovered an interesting creature; Humans! We saw our chance and took it. These Humans were slow and stupid and easy to please and we soon discover they would wait on us hand and foot of we acted cute and sometimes let them think they were in charge.
We lived with these humans for many years, hunting
only for fun and giving our prey to the Humans as a reward for being such good servants. But the humans were getting smarter, building huge structures to honor their deities. They soon recognized our High Goddess, the Great Basenji. Only they got it confused and called Her Anubis and said he was a Jackal. But we didn’t mind. They remembered that we were essentially Jackals ourselves, only better behaved and much< more accessible. So we became a focus for their worship. This was good; we were treated like gods. No more hunting for us! We were waited on hand a foot. Entire rituals were built around us!
But all good things must come to an end. After hundreds of years of Basenji worship, new Humans came and gave our Humans new gods. We were forced to return to our roots. We found some Humans who had not been caught up in the “new god thing” and we took them in as our servants again .
This existed for many years until some other Humans came to our villages. They were very strange; they talked with an odd language and wore odd clothes and their skin was really pale. But even these odd creatures could recognize our strength and beauty. So some of us volunteered to return with them to their home, with promises of liver treats of course.
This new land was called England. It was cold, we didn’t like it. But the new humans introduced us to blankets, which we thought were amazing things. They also “showed” us, which involved walking around in a circle and having a person look at our teeth and ears. These people thought we were very odd because they thought dogs were supposed to bark. A bark is a horrible coarse noise that a Basenji would never think of uttering more than once. Instead we Some of us stayed in England but some went to America. This place was even more different, very odd in fact. Lots of people came to look at us and thought we were very interesting. But we didn’t mind. We still had beds and blankets and servants and room service. We were pleased.
So now we live all over the world (Basenjis love to travel if it is our choice). We try not to live in cold places, because, well, they’re cold. Humans still wait on us and if they ever stop, the world as we know it will end, but we don’t think that will ever happen. We have come a long way from our wild savage Jackal ancestors and have found our true place in society!
