Student Assignment for the class projects on the Civil War.
1. Research the battle assigned to your group.
Battles
1. 2nd Battle of Bull Run (Manassas) Aug. 29-30,1862
2. 7 days Campaign (around Richmond) June25-July 1, 1862
3. Fredericksburg Dec. 13, 1862
4. Chancellorsville May 1-4, 1863
5. Petersburg June 15, 1864
6. Appomattox April 9, 1865 (Surrender of Lee to Grant)
2. Use books, CD Rom encyclopedias, and the internet
to gather information on 3x5 note cards. Books will be available
in class and in the library/media center.
3. Write down your source of information on the back
of your cards. (Making a Bibliography)
4. Each person will make a slide or slides for your Kid Pix
project. Each person will write down at least 2
sentences and put one graphic or draw one picture for
their slide.
5. Make the slides into a slideshow and record your
sentences. Videotape the slide show.
6. Each student will write an essay about your battle
and include a bibliography.
7. Each essay will tell:
1. when the battle occurred
2. several major people involved in the battle
3. at least 5 facts about the battle
4. conclude with the importance of the battle to Virginia
and the war
8. The essay will be written with a word processor
and each child will choose Chicago Font and size 14
letters. Don't forget the Bibliography.
9. Each group will create a data base and include the
following:
1. Name of the Person
2. Date of Birth
3. Date of Death
4. Contribution to the Battle
10. Each group will gather casualty figures for their
battle. Students will make a spreadsheet after all
casualty figures are gathered and we will turn it
into a graph to compare casualty figures.
11. Each group will make a group diorama about
your battle. Include pictures, models,
or figures to represent the battle. Try to
make it look like the area the battle was fought in
(mountains, or flat land, or near rivers, or around
trees).
We will spend 6 weeks learning about the Civil War.
The projects will be ongoing and worked on in class.
Remember when you arrive at school, the first thing in the
morning you will have 15 minutes to work on your
projects as well as 30 minutes the last thing in the
afternoon. Each piece of your project is important
to complete. We will read the historical fiction book
A ROSE AT BULL RUN by Maureen Stack Sappey in
class. Working together your group will finish
on time.
