Keep in mind that a slave did not change his "slave status" by marrying. Legally, a slave was not really permitted to marry. If a free woman had children by a slave, the children would not be slaves however, they were often "bounded out" to serve years of apprenticeship until the age of 18 or 21 if female. Age 31 if male. After serving specified years they were then truly "free'
