THE WALL

The Memorial Wall of the fallen heroes who fought in Vietnam ,

Is more than just a wall of names.

It stands for what makes our Nation grand.

It’s more than just a sight to see,

In the Capitol of this great land,

Just ask anyone who’s been there,

And you will hear them answer...

It’s on sacred hallowed ground you stand.

A little girl, now a lady made the trip one day,

To pay tribute to her father,

A man she never got to know,

For the war had taken him away.

Through tear dimmed eyes she read each name,

She read them one-by-one,

Until she came to Corporal Schroeder,

The father she lost to the war,

Just after her life had begun.

In tearful silence she just stood there,

While questions filled her mind,

Why did you have to go away,

Before you reached your prime?

Her aching heart swelled up with pride,

As she whispered soft his name,

"I love you Dad", she whispered,

"You did not die in vain".

With a trembling hand she ran her fingers,

Over the inscription on the wall,

Then once more she whispered "Daddy,

I hope you know I’m here today,

And that I love you most of all".

A surviving veteran standing near,

Who overheard the words she spoke,

Said, "He knows you’re here today".

Oh that filled her heart with hope.

Somehow she knew this was true,

For she felt his presence all around,

And she knew that this would be a day,

That she would remember,

As the day she stood on hallowed ground.

She made a rub of her father’s name,

And then found a place to sit,

In silence she just sat there,

As she in fondness stared down at it.

Her mind was filled with wonder,

Of how life might have been,

If from the war he had returned to her once again.

The little girl now a lady was grateful deep within,

As she vowed to her Father,

That she would come back again.

This is but one of the stories that The Wall can tell,

Each one different, but yet the same.

Yes, the Wall  holds a hero’s story,

Behind each and every name.
