"Even when reading is impossible, the presence of books acquired produces such an ecstasy that the buying of more books than one can read is nothing less than the soul reaching towards infinity... we cherish books even if unread, their mere presence exudes comfort, their ready access, reassurance." ~ A.E. Newton

"Wear the old coat and buy the new book." ~ Austin Phelps

"People say that life is the thing, but I prefer reading." ~ Logan Pearsall Smith

"When I am attacked by gloomy thoughts, nothing helps me so much as running to my books. They quickly absorb me and banish the clouds from my mind." ~ Michel de Montaigne

Recently I finished reading...

Bastard out of Carolina
by Dorothy Allison

A gritty story of a poor girl's life in the South of the 1950s and 60s. I remember one scene very clearly, but there was a lot of other stuff in the book I'd forgotten since I last read it nearly 10 years ago. It's a good piece of fiction—and it doesn't even have robots in it!

Frankenstein: Dead and Alive

It only took Dean Koontz four years to finish the Frankenstein trilogy. Gawd! I'm pretty happy with how things turned out, and definitely recommend the series.

Apparently Dean Koontz has signed on for another three books.

Currently I'm reading...

Spenser series
by Robert B. Parker

I decided, after re-reading the Sunny Randall series, that I wanted to revisit the Spenser novels. I started with book 1, The Godwulf Manuscript, and now need to get a copy of God Save the Child.

Book I occasionally pick up off the nightstand

Mister Rogers' Neighborhood:
Children, Television, and Fred Rogers
edited by Mark Collins and Margaret Mary Kimmel,
with a foreword by Bob Garfield

If you have feelings of nostalgia for our well-meaning neighbor, this might be a nice book for you to pick up. It's good to know that at least one person out there who was as kind a human being as he appeared to be.
