Arisia 2005: Enterprise Crew |

These three characters are members of the Enterprise crew, even though Marlena was just the captain's woman in parallel universe. The costumes for Kirk and Marlena's costumes were made of velour, which I have been given to understand was the material used on the show. It has a nice, lush appearance. We could not find a red velour that matched Rand's costume, nor a stretch velvet, so we had to use cotton velvet. |

Yeoman Janice RandShe was a recurring character on Star Trek played by Grace Lee Whitney. The costume was simple enough (or so we thought). We ordered a pattern online, but when we tried to assemble it, the costume didn't specify measurements, only sizes. Our model, Jess, was a 10, we made a 12, and it ended up being way too small. We also ordered the insignia for her uniform, and the boots we found at Target. |

| The hair was probably the biggest challenge: Yeoman Rand's famous woven up-do. Luckily, Andy has a friend who has some experience in musical theater. She claims that her only experience with wigs was during a production of Amadeus. Nevertheless, she worked magic with all our wigs. (Yes, our Rand's hair is too long. I don't care.) | |||||||
Lieutenant Marlena MoreauIn "Mirror, Mirror," a transporter accident brought the away team to an alternate universe where the Federation had evolved as an empire. In this universe, there was a "captain's woman" : Marlena Moreau. Our very own captain's woman, Kayla, filled the role perfectly. This costume from “Mirror, Mirror” might have been the easiest to make. To make the top I used a pattern for an empire-waist dress that used darts in the front and cut in enough in the back to match the original design (Simplicity 4991). |

The skirt was loosely based on a dress pattern where the skirt hugs the hips and then flares out. After pinning the muslin draft on the model, the skirt was cut to taper towards the back. We chose a material that was probably used to make the original costume: blue velour. The collar was made from black moleskin with a gold cord trim. To create the logo, we found an image on the Internet, made the colors match those used in the episode, and then printed it on a cotton iron-on sheet. After ironing it onto the costume, the edges were embroidered with gold thread. Our friend Matt (fellow Muppet lover) made the knife based on an image we found on the Internet, which featured a replica of the knife next to a ruler. Due to peace tie rules at the convention, we couldn't show it off too much. The wig had to be black and then have a "rat" in it to give it the beehive look. In addition, there was a braid across her head. The sash was made from a gold mesh over a gold satin. |

Captain James T. KirkI'm not going to spend a lot of time explaining this costume because, honestly, it wasn't that tough. And who wants to look at pictures of Andy when they can check out the girls? That was our strategy for the contest; Andy was a prop. We bought a pattern online but, like the Rand costume, it was way too small. The largest size didn't quite go halfway around our Andy. I worked with a baseball tee pattern and the purchased pattern to make something that would fit him. |

The color wasn't quite right, obviously. I wanted a mustard yellow, which I got, but I think it was supposed to be greener. We teased Andy because the shirt was Pooh-Bear yellow. Also, obviously Andy needed a wig. Our wig genius styled the one we bought to look like Kirk's (back when Shatner had hair!). |
