My friend Andy likes to compete in costume competitions, but he doesn't have many artistic skills. He does have skills in delegation, organization, and going to get the artists some food while they're working. The previous two times he has competed, his friends who made the costumes — Londo of Babylon 5 and then Dr. Evil and the Fembots — weren't that into it. I, on the other hand, like to sew. |

We were talking about our shared interests and realized that we would make a great team. We decided to do something for the Boston science fiction convention, Arisia, in 2005: babes of Star Trek, also known as Kirk and accessories. This was a somewhat silly decision, since fall 2004 was my toughest semester ever. And then I took a week-long vacation. And then it was the holidays. So, while we found time for fabric purchases and design, most of the actual sewing was done in the final two weeks. Andy also enlisted mechanical engineers and a programmer with a little experience in wigs for the accessories. It all worked out in the end, however, because we won Best in Show!
