The Sunshine of my Life!!

We all love our pets for the same reasons. To our pets, it doesn't matter if we look lousy, or wear funny clothes. It doesn't matter to them how much we owe, what we do for a living, what we drive, how we messed up at work, or what our political and social beliefs are. They are thrilled just to see us come walk in the door. They're content to cuddle, happy to play, willing to listen to our tirades and lick away our tears. They teach us to see each day with new vision and a sense of excitement. They are totally unconditional. You don't have to DO or BE anything for a pet, you just have to be WITH them. While I have a wonderful husband and some great friends, my pets are still, well, my best "babies." I don't have to worry about how I look, what I say, or how I feel. On some of my worst days, as a clinical depressive, they have literally saved my life. They comfort me when I'm sick or in one of my "dark places," engage me with their shenanigans, and give me someone to talk to when I'm alone. They are the stars of my "daily show of life," so without further ado, let me introduce you to........

SANDY!!!!!! my nearly-14-year old Cocker Spaniel, who's been with me since he was 8 weeks old! We've been down some hard roads together, but he never gave up on me. He's my pal, my child, my teacher, and my lovable "grumpy grampa." We take long walks to keep each other fit and trim, and he prefers to take his naps in my vicinity, in case I decide to have a snack! Sandy likes to chase squirrels (when he can see them, he's a little nearsighted in his old age), and play with his toys. He's a terrible bed-hog, but he does great "high fives" and will occasionally "speak" for a favorite chew-chew.

This is my regal and lovely "oldest daughter," Miss Ruby, who's about 5 years old. She's a "pound kitty" who came to us in 1993. She has very dainty manners, shows great tolerance to her "younger sister" (sometimes!), and has a cooing meow. Although Ruby is not a fan of "people food," she goes absolutely GA-GA for fresh prosciutto! Ruby is a determined kitty when it comes to getting her fair share of attention; she sits on the arm of the chair, and continues to pat my arm with her paw until I do what I'm "supposed" to do, and reach over to scratch under her chin. Every evening, she hops up on the bed and snuggles under the blanket with me, so I will give her tummy rubs for ten minutes before I go to sleep. I call her my bedtime "cuddle bunny"!

This is Evie, our youngest! Our little "monster face" has absolutely NO FEAR, and LOTS of curiosity. Tell her "no," and she'll try it anyway (as often as she can manage!). Evie is "daddy's girl," and quite a little scrapper!! We rescued her from the streets when she was six weeks old. Someone abandoned her and two siblings in a box under a bush, and good fortune had it that we and another person came along at the right time. The other Good Samaritan took home two of the furballs, and Evie happily clung to my husband Jon and adopted us on the spot! Evie learned her eating habits from the dog; she'' try any kind of people food, and eats like a cow when she finds something she likes. When I give Sandy his medicine ground up in yogurt at night, she climbs on the table and sticks her face in the yogurt cup!! Evie is usually the instigator of our household's "evening kitty crazies," which results in her and Ruby chasing each other all around the house, up and down stairs, pounding on one another! We hear the miscellaneous thumps and bumps from the upper floor, and we always know when the party has begun! Evie's favorite trick is "fetch," which I have unsuccessfully tried to teach to Sandy all of his life! Her favorite fetch toy is the ring off a plastic milk jug!
