25. A Leader? I went on a search to become a leader. I searched high and low. I spoke with authority, people listened but alas, there was one who was wiser than I and they followed him. I sought to inspire confidence but the crowd responded, "Why should we trust you?" I postured and I assumed the look of leadership with countenance that glowed with confidence and pride. But many passed by me and never noticed my air of elegance. I ran ahead of the others, pointing the way to new heights. I demonstrated that I knew the route to greatness. And then I looked back and I was alone. And I sat me down and pondered long. And then I listened to the voices around me. And I heard what the group was trying to accomplish. I rolled up my sleeves and joined in the work. As we worked I asked, "Are we all together in what we want to do and how to get the job done?" And we thought together and we fought together and we struggled towards our goal. I found myself encouraging the fainthearted. I sought the ideas of those too shy to speak out. I taught those who had little skill. I praised those who worked hard. When our task was completed, one of the groups turned to me and said, "This would not have been done but for your leadership." At first I said, " I didn't lead, I just worked with the rest." And then I understood, leadership is not a goal. It's a way of reaching a goal. I lead best when I helped others to go where we've decided we want to go. I lead best when I help others to use themselves creatively. I lead best when I forget about myself as a leader and focus on my group, their needs, and their goals. To lead is to serve, to give, to achieve TOGETHER. *anonymous

177. Friends Through the Years... As we have grown and changed so have our ideas on friendship.... 1. In kindergarten your idea of a good friend was the person who let you have the red crayon when all that was left was the ugly black one. 2. In first grade your idea of a good friend was the person who went to the bathroom with you and held your hand as you walked through the scary halls. 3. In second grade your idea of a good friend was the person who helped you stand up to the class bully. 4. In third grade your idea of a good friend was the person who shared their lunch with you when you forgot yours on the bus. 5. In fourth grade your idea of a good friend was the person who was willing to switch square dancing partners in gym so you wouldn't have to be stuck do-si-do-ing with Nasty Nicky or Smelly Susan. 6. In fifth grade your idea of a good friend was the person who saved a seat on the back of the bus for you. 7. In sixth grade your idea of a good friend was the person who went up to Nick or Susan, your new crush, and asked them to dance with you, so that if they said no, you wouldn't have to be embarrassed. 8. In seventh grade, your idea of a good friend was the person who let you copy the social studies homework from the night before that you had forgotten about. 9. In eighth grade your idea of a good friend was the person who helped you pack up your stuffed animals and old baseball cards so that your room would be a "high schooler's" room, but didn't laugh at you when you finished and broke down in tears. 10. In ninth grade your idea of a good friend was that person who went with you to that "cool" party thrown by a senior so you wouldn't wind up being the only freshman there. 11. In tenth grade your idea of a good friend was the person who changed their schedule so you would have someone to sit with at lunch. 12. In eleventh grade your idea of a good friend was the person who gives you rides in their new car, convinced your parents that you shouldn't be grounded, consoled you when you broke up with Nick or Susan, and found you a date to the prom. 13. In twelfth grade your idea of a good friend was the person who helped you pick out a college, assured you that you would get into that college, helped you deal with your parents who were having a hard time adjusting to the idea of letting you go.... 14. At graduation your idea of a good friend was the person who was crying on the inside but managed the biggest smile one could give as they congratulated you and held you the tightest of all --- reminding you that they would never let you go too far. 15. The summer after twelfth grade your idea of a good friend was the person who helped you clean up the bottles from that party, helped you sneak out of the house when you couldn't deal with your parents, assured you that now that you and Nick or you and Susan were back together, you could make it through anything, helped you pack up for college and just silently hugged you as you looked through blurry eyes at 18 years of memories you were leaving behind, and finally on those last days of childhood, went out of their way to come over and send you off with a hug, a lot of memories, reassurance that you would make it in college as well as you had these past 18 years, and most importantly sent you off to college knowing you were loved always and truly. 16. Now, your idea of a good friend is still the person who gives you the better of the two choices, hold your hand when you're scared, helps you fight off those who try to take advantage of you, thinks of you at times when you are not there, reminds you of what you have forgotten, helps you put the past behind you but understands when you need to hold on to it a little longer, stays with you so that you have confidence, goes out of their way to make time for you, helps you clear up your mistakes, helps you deal with pressure from others, smiles for you when they are sad, helps me become a better person, and most importantly loves you! *anonymous

I wish you could find something so worthwhile that you deem it worth investing your life within it. I wish you could achieve some great "good" for mankind, but have nobody know about it except you. I hope you give so much of yourself that some days you wonder if it is worth all the effort. I wish for you a magnificent obsession that will give you a reason for living and a purpose and direction for life. I wish for you the worst kind of criticism for everything you do, because that makes you fight to achieve beyond what you normally would. Call someone you love and say, 'I love you.' (Make 2 or 3 calls; who says you can't love more than one person, in different ways of course.) Go through your closets and give all those clothes you've been saving until you lose 10 pounds to your favorite charity. Call someone who's lonely and say, 'I'm thinking of you.' Visit a sick friend. Say a prayer. Donate some blood. Adopt a pet. Will your eyes, your kidneys, and all your usable organs to someone who can use them after you're gone. Forgive an enemy. Write a fan letter. Listen to a bore. Pay your doctor. Tell your parents you think they are wonderful. Spay your dog. Neuter your cat. Quit smoking. Drive carefully. If you're walking, watch where you are going. And don't wait until next year to be a sweetheart again." (Courtesy of Nicole M. McDermott)

I tried several times to be friendly to some of the members, but they all had their own friends that they talk to and sit next to. I sat down several times but no one paid any attention to me. I hoped very much that somebody would have asked me to take part in a fund-raising project or something, but no one saw my efforts when I volunteered. "Guys are assholes," we always say, yet their stupid games we play. One day this, the next day that. So we turn to food which makes us fat. Then they complain we're putting on weight, defining to us why we never date. They're the reason, the stupid fucks, making us believe college life really sucks. Screw them all, lets grab a beer. We've got our friends, they're all here. Cheers to the girls, fuck the guys, we're sick of their shit and stupid ass lies. We don't need them, no not us. Good for a scam, but never to trust. So here's what to do. Together we stand. We'll party it up with beers in each hand. Alone in our beds of course we might end, but we don't get dumped and we still have our friends. *anonymous, courtesy of Anne-Marie Jannace 416. Live with intention. Walk to the edge. Listen hard. 421. Phenomenal Woman. Pretty woman wonder where my secret lies. I'm not cute or built to suit a fashion model's size. But when I start to tell them, they think I'm telling lies. I say, it's in the reach of my arms, the span of my hips, the stride of my step, the curl of my lips. I'm a woman phenomenally. Phenomenal woman, that's me. I walk into a room just as cool as you please, and to a man, the fellows stand or fall down on their knees. Then they swarm around me, a hive of honey bees. I say, it's the fire in my eyes, and the flash of my teeth, the swing in my waist, and the joy in my feet. I'm a woman phenomenally. Phenomenal woman, that's me. *Maya Angelou
