Lesson:Learning to Love our Savior

(May be copy and printed for home use only)

A.Gather items that represent the Savior, into a beautiful gift box or Christmas container that says, "TO KNOW HIM IS TO LOVE HIM". Attach a scripture number on each item.

1. A star ( Hel. 14:5
5 And behold, there shall a new star arise, such an one as ye never have beheld; and this also shall be a sign unto you.)


2. A small nativity scene or picture or ornament with the nativity.
(Luke 2:7 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.)


3. A carpenters tool (can be made from foil).
(Mark 6:3 Is not this the carpenter, the son of James, and Joses, and of Juda, and Simon?


4. A picture of Jesus as a child teaching in the temple. (Luke 2:42
42 And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast.

Luke 2:46
46 And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions.

Luke 2:47
47 And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers.)


5. A piece of bread (representing the fast and temptation). (Matt. 4:1
1 Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.

Matt. 4:2
2 And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred.

Matt. 4:3
3 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.

Matt. 4:4
4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

Matt. 4:5
5 Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple,

Matt. 4:6
6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.

Matt. 4:7
7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.

Matt. 4:8
8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;

Matt. 4:9
9 And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.

Matt. 4:10
10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

Matt. 4:11
11 Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.)


6. A dove to represent his baptism. (Matt. 3:16 16 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:

Matt. 3:17
17 And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Mark 1:10
10 And straightway coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon him:)


7. A fish net (a hair net or a fish, to represent him gathering in his apostles, as fishers of men).(Matt. 4:18
18 ¶ And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers.

Matt. 4:19
19 And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.

Matt. 4:20
20 And they straightway left their nets, and followed him.)


8. Some seed to represent his parables and teachings. ( Matt. 13:3
3 And he spake many things unto them in parables, saying, Behold, a sower went forth to sow;

Matt. 13:4
4 And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the way side, and the fowls came and devoured them up:

Matt. 13:5
5 Some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth: and forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness of earth:

Matt. 13:6
6 And when the sun was up, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away.

Matt. 13:7
7 And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up, and choked them:

Matt. 13:8
8 But other fell into good ground, and brought forth fruit, some an hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold.

Matt. 13:9
9 Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.

Matt. 13:10
10 And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables?)


9. A heart shape to represent his love. (John 13:34
34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.

John 15:9
9 As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love.

John 15:13
13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.)


10.A stick to remind us of how he forgave and judged with kindness.(drew in the sand)(mote and beam) (Matt. 7:3
3 And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?

John 8:16
16 And yet if I judge, my judgment is true: for I am not alone, but I and the Father that sent me.

John 8:6
6 This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not.

John 8:7
7 So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.

John 8:8
8 And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground.

John 8:9
9 And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.

John 8:10
10 When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee?

John 8:11
11 She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.)


11.A coin to show how much he revered the temple(money changers) ( Matt. 21:13
13 And said unto them, It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves.)


12.Anointing oil, how he healed the sick and performed miracles. (Luke 4:18
18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,)


13.A palm frond or donkey picture. (How he was revered)(Matt. 21:8
8 And a very great multitude spread their garments in the way; others cut down branches from the trees, and strawed them in the way.

Matt. 21:9
9 And the multitudes that went before, and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna to the Son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest.

Matt. 21:10
10 And when he was come into Jerusalem, all the city was moved, saying, Who is this?

Matt. 21:11
11 And the multitude said, This is Jesus the prophet of Nazareth of Galilee.)


14.A small cup, to represent the Passover.(Luke 22:19
19 ¶ And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.

Luke 22:20
20 Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.)


15.A sheep, to represent the lamb of God. ( Rev. 7:17
17 For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.)


16.An olive branch,leaf,or olive, to represent the Garden of Gethsemanie, and Jesus' great atonement. (Matt. 26:30
30 And when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives.

Matt. 26:36
36 ¶ Then cometh Jesus with them unto a place called Gethsemane, and saith unto the disciples, Sit ye here, while I go and pray yonder.

Luke 22:41
41 And he was withdrawn from them about a stone's cast, and kneeled down, and prayed,

Luke 22:42
42 Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.

Luke 22:43
43 And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him.

Luke 22:44
44 And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground. (this is when jesus took upon himself our sins. The greatest gift to man was this atoning sacrifice.)


17.A cross to represent His great sacrifice for mankind. (Luke 23:33
33 And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left.

Luke 23:34
34 ¶ Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.

Luke 23:38
38 And a superscription also was written over him in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew, THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.

Luke 23:46
46 ¶ And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.)


18.An angel ornament or picture to represent the angel at the tomb on the day He was resurrected.(Luke 24:2
2 And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre.

Luke 24:3


3 And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus.

Luke 24:4
4 And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed thereabout, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments:

Luke 24:5
5 And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead?

Luke 24:6
6 He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee,

Luke 24:7
7 Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.)


19.A Book of Mormon, You also can learn more of Christ if you read the Book of Mormon.


B. Write on the top of a poster, "How can we get to know the Savior?"


Lesson

1. (prayer, song: Christmas Carol), Show the Large Christmas package to your family.
2. Tell them that is is a gift from someone very special.
3. Open the gift and have them look inside. Ask if they know who it is from.
4. Take out each item in order as it is above.
5. Tell your family that these items are little clues that will help us know for sure who it is from.
6. Show them the star first, and tell your family that this clue will give it away. For God so loved this person that he sent a special star as a sign of His birth. (Read the attached scripture).
7. Take the next item out and ask what this has to do with a King. Explain that he was born in about the lowliest place a person can be born, in a stable with the animals. Yet this was the only begotten son of the Father. A KING should not be born in a stable. Why was Jesus? (Read attached scripture).attached 8. Take every item out from thereon and explain that this will help us to get to know him better, read each attached scripture.

9. Ask family members how they got to know their friends. give time for each answer.
10. Get the poster and read what it says.Ask; How can we get to know the Savior? (Possible answers may be, pray, we must talk to Heavenly Father alot like we do our friends, and the Savior will draw near and send His spirit, that we may know Him as well as our Father. read about him, have pictures of him as we would have pictures of our loved ones up. Talk about him, study his life by attending church meetings, family home evenings seminary etc. By obeying Him.
11. Bear testimony how Jesus has influenced and affected your own life. Bear witness that he lives and gave us the greatest gift of all. Resurrection, and the chance to make it to the Celestial kingdom and be together forever.
12. Prayer, song(Christmas song)
