1. Ask: Who did Joseph Smith, under revelation from God, direct the revelations in the D&C to? Can they be used for us?

2. . Nephi counseled us to liken the scriptures unto ourselves, so putting our own names in the scriptures is one method of doing that. It can allow us to apply counsel from the Lord to individual Saints in the D&C to ourselves. Pass out handouts.

3. Ok so lets try this with each of you. (Print enough of these so each member of your family can have one). Have each member fill there own name in the blanks and then read it like this. (some of the scriptures were changed just a bit to make it as if it was speaking to the reader)

1 Nephi 19:23
And I did read many things unto (you)_________________ which were written in the Book of Moses; but that I might more fully persuade (you)_______________ to believe in the Lord (your) Redeemer I did read unto (you) that which was written by the prophet Isaiah; for I did liken all scriptures unto (you), that it might be for your profit and learning.

D&C 25:13-16
Wherefore _____________ lift up thy heart and rejoice, and cleave unto the covenants which thou hast made.

Continue in the spirit of meekness, and beware of pride. Let thy soul delight in thy husband ,(when you get married), and the glory which shall come upon him.

___________________ keep my commandments continually, and a crown of righteousness thou shalt receive. And except thou do this, where I am you cannot come.

And verily, verily, _________I say unto you, that this is my voice unto all. Amen.

D&C 61:36-37
And now _________________, verily I say unto you, and what I say unto one I say unto all, be of good cheer, little children; for I am in your midst, and I have not forsaken you;

And inasmuch as you have humbled yourselves before me, ______________ the blessings of the kingdom are yours.

D&C 82:1-6
VERILY, verily, I say unto you, my (servant)_______________, that inasmuch as you have forgiven (others) (their) trespasses, even so I, the Lord, forgive you.

Nevertheless, _____________there are those among you who have sinned exceedingly; yea, even you have sinned; but verily I say unto you, beware from henceforth, and refrain from sin, lest sore judgments fall upon your (head).

For of him unto whom much is given much is required; and he who sins against the greater light shall receive the greater condemnation .

________________ ye call upon my name for revelations , and I give them unto you; and inasmuch as ye keep not my sayings, which I give unto you, ye become transgressors; and justice and judgment are the penalty which is affixed unto my law.

Therefore, what I say unto one I say unto all:________ Watch , for the adversary his dominions, and darkness reigneth;

And the anger of God kindleth against the inhabitants of the earth; and none doeth good, for all have gone out of the way.

D&C 93:49 ________________ what I say unto one I say unto all; pray always lest that wicked one have power in you, and remove you out of your place.

4. Lets talk about Pride. We were told in the Conference that Pride is the great sin of the latter days. should be meek and avoid pride. Here are some scriptures that warn against pride: Read brief descriptions.

D&C 25:14, Emma was commanded to “continue in the spirit of meekness, and beware of pride”.
· D&C 23:1 warned Oliver Cowdrey against pride.
· D&C 38:39 warned the Saints
· D&C 90:17 was addressed to the First Presidency
· D&C 98:19-20 admonished the Kirtland Saints

5.On a large paper, have a family member write the words as directed by the family members. Have the family members choose which words best describe pride. Have family members choose which words best describe what they think would be the best words that describe the opposite of pride.

6. Read:
Pres. Ezra Taft Benson taught: “Most of us think of pride as self-centeredness, conceit, boastfulness, arrogance, or haughtiness. All of these are elements of the sin, but the heart, or core, is still missing. The central feature of pride is enmity-enmity toward God and enmity toward our fellowmen. Enmity means ‘hatred toward, hostility to, or a state of opposition’” (Ensign, May 1989, 4)
Pres. Benson explained how pride affects our relationship with God: “Pride is essentially competitive in nature. We pit our will against God’s…in the spirit of ‘my will and not thine be done.’ Our will in competition to God’s will allows desires, appetites, and passions to go unbridled… Our enmity toward God takes on many labels, such as rebellion, hard-heartedness, stiff-neckedness, unrepentant, puffed up, easily offended, and sign seekers. The proud wish God would agree with them. They aren’t interested in changing their opinions to agree with God’s” (Ensign, May 1989, 4)
Pres. Benson also explained how pride affects our relationship with others: “We are tempted daily to elevate ourselves above others and diminish them… Selfishness is one of the more common faces of pride… Another face of pride is contention. Arguments, fights, unrighteous dominion, generation gaps, divorces, spouse abuse, riots, and disturbances all fall into this category of pride.” (Ensign, May 1989, 4)
As Latter-day Saints, we should overcome pride and cultivate a spirit of meekness. Pres. Benson counseled: ”The antidote for pride is humility-meekness, submissivenes. It is the broken heart and contrite spirit… We can choose to humble ourselves by loving God, submitting our will to His, and putting Him first in our lives” (Ensign, May 1989, 6-7)

7. This week, try reading the scriptures with the intent of applying the messages of the scriptures to your individual circumstances. The Lord wants us to be of good cheer. He ever reminds us that peace and joy can be found regardless of our circumstances. 8.Bear Testimony of how this has applied to your life or someone that you know. 9. Prayer and blessing on food.
