This is Jantar Mantar in New Delhi. Venk and I came here in the morning--it was INCREDIBLY hot and humid, and we had no water. Fortunately, later in the day it rained, well, sprinkled a bit, and made things noticeably cooler.
Jantar Mantar is an observatory for astronomy study. This is one of 5 observatories built by Sawai Jia Singh II. He was an astronomer and noble of the Mughal court. He thought that larger tools would be more accurate in predicting astronomical events. Although it looks more like a modern art sculpture garden to me. The best part about Jantar Mantar was climbing on these instruments. If it had been less hot, it would make a fun, huge playground! (31 July 2002)
