This is part of the decoration on the front of the Taj Mahal. The decorations are all carved into the marble, and then inlaid with precious stones. The effect is gorgeous. The Taj Mahal was completed in 1653, after 22 years of construction. Koran verses are written in panels around the arches, and the calligraphic lettering increases up the side of the arch to give the illusion that they are all the same size. (28 July 2002)
