This is the upper level of the back courtyard of the Hawa Mahal ("Wind Palace") in Jaipur. The Hawa Mahal is 5 stories high and only 1 room deep. The rooms of the palace have intricate carved window designs, which allowed the ladies of the harem to sit and enjoy the breeze and watch down to the busy street below, but they could not be easily seen from the street. It was built in 1799 by Sawai Pratap Singh. (27 July 2002)
