Fighting Arts of New Zealand

 

Unfortunately the fighting art of the Maori people is not very well documented and it is still taught orally and practically to students.

Never less they do have a very distinctive fighting style called the "Mau" (hand to hand) and "Mau Rakau" (fighting sticks).

 

Besides hand to hand combat the people of New Zealand also use various weapons. Each weapon having its own training and general style as well as personal adaptation of that style.

 

Some of the traditional weapons used by Maori's are as follows:

 

 

Hoe

Hoe

The hoe is classed as a long club. It has multi purposes. It can be used as a paddle or a weapon


 

 

Pou Whenua

Pou Whenua

The pou whenua is classed as a long club. This particular one is made from the rib of a whale


 

Tewhatewha

Tewhatewha

The tewhatewha is classed as a long club. The decorations on it range from feathers to live birds


Toki Pou Tangata

 

 

Toki Pou Tangata

 

The Toki Pou Tangata is classed as an adze. Made for ceromonial occasions, the stone is greenstone. Notice the intricate carving


Taiaha

Taiaha

The taiaha is classed as a long club. This is one of the most well known weapons of the Maori. Taiaha are from 5 feet in length and longer


Maripi

The maripi is classed as a short club. Notice the teeth like edges at the bottom. This part was used for cutting


Mere

The mere is classed as a short club. Weapons made in the same shape, but in wood, are called patu


 

Wahaika

Wahaika

The wahaika is classed as a short club. The indent on the right is for catching weapons. With the right flick and twist of the wrist, the opponent can be disarmed. Notice the carved handle as well as the figure carved on the left


Kotiate

The kotiate is classed as a short club. Notice the texture of the kotiate. This one is made is whale bone, a very valuble commodity to the Maori world.


 

The most commonly taught of these are that of the Taiaha.

The fighting style and routines of this weapon are taught in regular schools on Mokoia Island in Rotorua.
