EveningStar

The Hand of Mystra

EveningStar, or Devonuel as he was lovingly named by his parents, was orphaned at a very early age when his parents were killed by a miss-wrought mage construct that escaped the attention of its creator. The Arch Mage Ul-Mur-Dan had been working on creating a flying battle beast to aid in some long forgotten war. In his initial experimentations Ul-Mur-Dan created an ill-tempered evil beast he appropriately named Badseed-Mur-Dex. Being a kind soul Ul-Mur-Dan had not the heart to bring himself to destroy his creation. An abnormal magic flux caused by an enemy mage allowed Badseed-Mur-Dex to escaped his magic confines without detection. When Ul-Mur-Dan sought out his bastard pet and discovered only the ruins of a small cottage, the family dead excepting a small child at the mercy of the beast, he did what he knew had to be done and killed Badseed-Mur-Dex. Lacking other options Ul-Mur-Dan took the child under his roof and made arrangements for his care and upbringing. I was that child.

Growing up under the care of an Arch Mage was a different kind of an existence than other children experienced. However, I was well cared for and whatever was needed was given. Ul-Mur-Dan was besought with remorse for his responsibility in the death of my parents and he denied me little. So when I asked to learn the ways of his craft he readily appointed me his assistant and apprentice. Quite naturally mage study was about the only activity available at Ul-Mur-Dan's mage-keep. I applied myself fully to the task of becoming a mage and progressed along that path rapidly. I learned well the ways of Ul-Mur-Dan's craft and became intoxicated with the spirit of Mystra. Growing up with no family other than a good intentioned teacher and magic being my only friend I came to think of Mystra as a mother figure and her followers shall be my brothers and sisters.

Having attained the strength of an Arch Mage, and at the same time reaching manhood, I pledged myself to Mystra and titled myself The Hand of Mystra. Being mildly flattered by my action and with master Ul-Mur-Dan being in the Goddess' favor, Mystra accepted me and I quickly found myself busily carrying out her wishes. As The Hand of Mystra I received the benefit of immortality. The last mission I received from my Goddess found me traveling through a place between worlds to the world of Gaia. There I was to aid the kingdom of Lunataris in preparation for an invasion planned by the legions of the Wyrm. In the short couple years prior to the invasion planned by the black forces I worked my way into the position of Lord High Mage of Lunataris. However, I made it clear to the rulers of the Kingdom that my highest allegiance would disallow me pledging fealty to Lunataris.

The attack came and I did all that I was able to aid in repulsing the attackers. This was my greatest failure. I, the Knights of Lunataris, and the array of other forces of the kingdom did fight our best against the evil sent by the mighty Wyrm to destroy us. At the end, the battle was lost. Having drained myself in battle of all but the barest scrap of power I called upon the Demon Khelendros to return a favor owed from a task Mystra had appointed me to many years prior. Khelendros honored this favor by opening a gateway to another place and time. Thus the last remaining members of Lunataris were spared the intended fate of the Wyrm and found themselves on this new world.

Shamed by my defeat, humbled before my goddess, immortality lost, and finding myself on a strange world where all my power and knowledge of magic craft was useless, I began again. Having experienced only a life of magic and thus lacking in martial skills I find myself painfully at the mercy of evil and the evil hearted upon this new world. I remain with the Kingdom of Lunataris to aid in the protection of the remaining lineage and the ways of their knighthood. To regain my skills in mage craft I have also become an Acolyte of the Crystal Hall.

I will remain apart from my goddess for a time until I regain my strength and redeem my spirit. This will not end until I can once again pronounce:

" I am light in the cold black darkness, I am The Hand of Mystra,

I am EveningStar. "
