27 February 1999: Rape Defence for Women Seminar (Sidmouth Avenue, Oranjezicht, Cape Town)
Course Instructor : Sanette Smit, 6th Dan Karate. Time: 1pm - 5:30pm. Cost: R100,00 per person. This workshop is for women only as and deals with the aspects of rape and women share their experiences with the group. People can contact Sanette Smit for further information or bookings. Tel/fax: (021) 948-6465. Sanette is one of two of the most senior female karateka in this country. A long standing exponent of the art, she currently heads the Women's Forum Division with KASA. She was also Sports person of the year for 1998.

21&22 March 1999: All styles advanced seminar (Cape Town)
The seminar is retricted to the most senior grades of each group. Part of the training will focus on Goju Ryu basics and moving (two sessions), Ashihara Karate basics and principles, Kyokushin and TaeKwonDo as well as a session on the Bo and one on Filipino stick fighting. Included over the weekend will be a referee course. Styles or dojos currently attending will include: S.A. 26-28 March 1999: Basic Healing Tao Course (Cape Town)
This course will be taught by Christo & Brenda Trautmann, who are qualified to teach Mantak Chia's Healing Tao system. This is the basic course, starting on Friday night, then the whole of Saturday and Sunday. Course will include the Inner Smile, Healing Sounds, Microcosmic orbit, Healing Love and Iron Shirt. 28 March 1999: Knife tactics workshop (Johannesburg)

28 March 1999: International Tai Chi Society Seminar (Durban)

10 April 1999: World T'ai Chi Day
World T'ai Chi Day will be held on the Saturday immediately following the United Nation's World Health Day, and will entail T'ai Chi groups around the world gathering at 10 am (each city's local time) to exhibit T'ai Chi to the world in mass gatherings in public parks or the lawns of public buildings, so as to be visible to the community and media. 10 April 1999: Yang-style T'ai Chi seminar by Dr Yang Jwing-Ming (Pretoria)
This six hour seminar will be given by Dr Yang, visiting from the US, who is the founder of the YMAA. Attendance costs R300 for non-members of the YMAA. Few places are left, so please book early. 10 April 1999: Shaolin Africa Cup (Wits Old Mutual Sports Hall, Johannesburg)
Over 200 students from the various Shaolin Martial Art Centres will be competeing in sparring, forms (weapon and sparring), choreographed sparring sets etc. Spectator tickets are R50.00.

11 April 1999: Chin-na seminar by Dr Yang Jwing-Ming (Pretoria)
Chin-na is the art of joint-locks. Dr Yang has written a few well-known books on the topic, and this is an excellent opportunity to train under Dr Yang himself. This will be a six hour seminar, costing R300 for non-members of the YMAA. Few places are left, so please book early. 17 April 1999: Seminar with Shihan Watanabe 8th Dan from Australia (Eikestad Junior School, Stellenbosch)
Shihan Kensho Watanabe is a leading figure in modern day karate and has trained with many top Instructors of Japanese origin. Sensei Neil van Zyl's organisation in the Strand is the host. 17 April 1999: All Styles Clicker Championships (Athlone Technical College, Cape Town)
Students will be competing in either Kata (forms) or Kumite (sparring). For Kumite both the semi-contact continuous sparring using clickers and the knock down rules will apply. It start at 8.30am. 17-18 April 1999: Romolo Barros: Grappling Seminar (UCT Hall 3, Cape Town)

30 May 1999: Self defence seminar (Hall 29, Wits University)
This three hour seminar will be hosted by several Tang Soo Do black belts. It is open to men and women, and is great for people wanting to learn the simplest and most effective techniques for looking after themselves. Useful as both an introduction and a refresher. 12 June 1999: 3rd Western Cape Open Taekwondo Championships (Table View Health & Raquet Club)

24 July 1999: Development Championships (Athlone Technical College)
This event begins at 8.30am, and is for those that have never won a medal at an All Styles Provincial event. Divisions will be held for both Kumite and Kata and it is restricted to those up until the age of 18. The cut off time for entries will be Friday at 10.00am. 31 July & 1 August 1999: Weapons, Grappling & Karate Seminar (Milnerton, Cape Town)

Ki Aikido is the group developed by Koichi Tohei (Shin Shin Toitsu Aikido) that is devoted to the teaching of the principles of Ki - that includes Ki development exercises for the unification of mind and body and aikido techniques.

28 August 1999: 10th Invitational (International) Championships & Sabaki Challenge '99 (UCT Sports Centre, Cape Town)
This tournament is open to all styles of martial art, and will be run on the clicker system of semi-contact karate and there will be several kata and kumite divisions for male and female competitors. The divisions will be as per weight/age format. For senior contestants there will be three semi- and full contact divisions: under 65kg, between 65 - 75kg and over 75kg. The Full contact division is our Sabaki Challenge which we have incorporated with the invitationals. Extensive media coverage is expected. The seminar is organised by Ashihara Karate and will be presented by the Rape Crisis Centre. With Rape and Abuse on the ever increase, this seminar will provide handy tips and information on how to deal with such issues and what to do should one be in such situations. A brief demonstration of self defence with specific emphasis on Rape Prevention will be done at the end of the session which starts at 3.00pm.

JKD, the fighting art of the legendary Bruce Lee is becoming very popular in South Africa due to its concepts of being fuctional & effective in all the ranges of combat. 10 October 1999: Pankration Tournament (Wits Universtity Great Hall)
Pankration is a style taking the world by storm, and is making a bid to compete in the 2004 Olympics in Greece. It is a blend of judo and karate, allowing for kicking, punching, throwing and grappling on the ground. It is therefor all inclusive and allows anyone from any discipline to enter. This is *not* a "no holds barred free for all" but is governed by a stringent and non-biased rule system , favouring neither the grappler nor the striker. There will be a rules seminar prior to the event. However the organisers require judges, and would like to know if anyone can help. For more details contact Jake Davidow at cobramar@global.co.za.

16 October 1999: Filipino Eskrima (All of GM Pasa's seminars have been cancelled)
This is one of several seminars to be offered by Grandmaster Abner G. Pasa from the Phillipines, in this visit to South Africa. 3-9 January 2000: T'ai Chi Workshop (Wagendrift Dam, Estcourt)
The T'ai Chi Institute of Health will be holding a workshop, concentrating in great detail on Section One of the traditional Yang long form, incorporating the moves, the applications, and philosophy with emphasis on the basic principles of T'ai Chi. No previous experience is required.
Basic accommodation (males and females in separate dormitories, basic ablutions and beds with no linen) is provided at the Wagendrift Youth Centre, as well as all meals (vegetarian) with the idea of starting the new year off on a an invigorating to path to improved discipline and health (no cigarettes, sweets, chocolate, biscuits, cakes or alcohol allowed). A practical and spiritual experience not to be missed. Will also include Chi Kung, meditation and some free time to enjoy the surrounding area.

25 March - 15 April 2000: Healing Tao: Chi Kung Seminar (Johannesburg)
This is a foundation course based on the teachings of Master Mantak Chia (The Healing Tao). This course runs on four consecutive Saturdays from 9am - 11am.
We will cover the basic foundations of chi kung, learning to feel, enhance and direct the energy through the body and meridians. Techniques include the Inner Smile, the Six Healing sounds, the Microcosmic Orbit and Iron Shirt Chi Gung.

8 April 2000: World T'ai Chi Day (several venues: see below)
Starting at 10am, this is a follow-up to the United Nations World Health Day, and involves Tai Chi communities around the world. Anybody interested can have the opportunity to go and experience Tai Chi Chuan. It is a non-profit event to educate the public in general and the local community in particular, about the health benefits of Tai Chi.

Minimum requirements: 21 years of age; 5 years traditional martial arts training.

2 September 2000: Annual Kushido Festival 2000 (Cape Technikon's Sport Complex, Cape Town)
From 10am to 3pm. The local championships (Boland and Western Cape), the Black Belt Championships and a martial arts Festival will be rolled into one event. The Festival will include Traditional Karate (Goju) with Kata, Randori and Kumite. Black-belts are also required to do at least one weapons kata (Ryukyu, using either Bo, Nunchaku, Tonfa or Sai) as well as one prepared kata and one surprise kata. There will also be demonstrations of various types of self-defence situations with and without weapons in the hands of attackers. Also a Wu Li Tai Chi demo. We anticipate between 150 to 200 participants, 80% of which will be Western Cape/Boland based, with the rest from around the country and perhaps some from overseas dojos. Chin Na ("Qinna") is the study of how to control your opponent. It uses joint locks to limit mobility, and attacks acupuncture cavities and other sensitive parts of the body with strikes, grabs, and other techniques. Chin Na is part of the course of study in almost all Chinese martial styles, and it can be a valuable addition to any other martial system. Chinese Chin Na is the root of the Japanese arts of Jujitsu and Aikido, and practitioners can use the study of Chin Na to increase their understanding of the theory and principles of their own arts.

The annual Pankration Friendly Competition between the RATs and Cobra Martial Arts will this year also include Micah Atkinson's Freestyle fighters and possibly some kickboxers. Master Li Siu Hung and Sifu Joseph Keit from the World Lee Koon Hung Choy Lay Fut Kung Fu Association will be visiting South Africa during April. Master Li Sui Hung, with over 35 years experience, is considered an authority in Choy Lay Fut Kung Fu. He is a former full contact fighting champion, weapons and forms champion teaches in Ft. Lauderdale USA, continuing the legacy of his famed brother, Grandmaster Lee Koon Hung. He will be accompanied by Sifu Joe Keit, an instructor at the Lee Koon Hung Association, who is a two-time Grand Champion in fighting and forms and has been training in Martial Arts since age 7.
Choy Lay Fut Drunken form teaches many self defense techniques using quick and deceptive movements that mimic a drunkard. 27-28 April 2001: South African Chinese Kuoshu Tournament (Modderfontein Sports Club, Modderfontein)
The South African Chinese Kuoshu Authority invites you to a combined Wushu, Kung-Fu and Tai Chi friendly tournament. There will be a judging and referee course on the morning of the 27th, followed by an orientation seminar on the rules. The sections are hand form, short weapon, long weapon and group. Hand and weapon are further broken up into male and female as well as under 12, 13 to 16 and over 16 years of age. The Tai Chi sections are 24 step, 42 step, Yang, Chen and group. The sections are further broken up into male and female and into under 39 and over 40. Lei Tai fighting divisions are as per International Chinese Kuoshu Federation guidelines as are the rules. There are 2 categories "A" for experienced and "B" for novice fighters. There is a tournament fee (entitling entrants to take part in all events that they wish to) of R100 for non-kuoshu members, and R50 for kuoshu members.

Master Hirokazo Kanazawa is called the "Last Living Samurai", the "Emperor of the Soul of Karate" and is the only living 10th Dan awarded by the Emperor of Japan! This will be the most spectacular event on the Martial Arts Calendar this year. It follows on from the success of the All Styles Championships held four years ago.
