"DARREN!! DANIEL!! WE LOVE YOU!!!" The cries of adoration rang throughout the entertainment centre as Savage Garden played. But neither man heard the cries, and not just because they were concentrating on their performance.
Darren was always flirting with Daniel, raising his eyebrows, flashing secret smiles. He had done this for every show during the world tour, leaving Daniel to wonder exactly where he stood in the course of Darren's emotions. Tonight, finally, he knew. Daniel smiled back as he always did; tonight, something would happen.
Tonight.
Darren, the professional that he was, didn't miss a beat in carrying the show as he always did. He could tell, however, that this one was different. Daniel was not just being coy, he was responding, and his response was I want you tonight.
To the audience, it was just another performance, albeit a fantastic one, as Savage Garden always gave 110% to what they did. To Darren and Daniel, it was the foreplay before the foreplay, the calm before the storm.
Backstage immediately following a concert is always hectic. There were record company people to schmooze with, and media to duck. Grins and nods as they were being congratulated for putting on a great show. Most were sincere, some were not. Daniel helped himself to a beer, as Darren sank down on a couch, happily exhausted.
Brian made his way among the throngs; a path was made for him to walk straight through.
"Great job tonight," he said, shaking both Darren's and Daniel's hands. "I watched the show from the wings."
"You were pretty good too," Darren offered. He noticed Brian was wearing a dress, much to his bemusement. On anyone else it would look ridiculous, on Brian it was as sexy as an Armani suit.
"Us? Nah. Fucking monitor screwed up, it's clearly on its last legs." He looked to Daniel, to see if he showed any anger from their earlier conversation. There wasn't. But Brian felt no need to apologize either.
"I'll leave you two to be," Brian said, turning around to make his way back to Placebo's dressing room.
"Hey, nice dress," Daniel said with a hint of amusement in his voice.
Brian looked at him, to Darren, and then the both of them. "I was right all along. You two definitely are in love. Don't deny it any longer." And with that, he left before either one of the duo could comment anything more.
Not that there was anything more to say. Brian had said what Darren and Daniel had already known.
