I was checking my e-mail when Mark walked up to my desk. He tossed the magazine in front of me. It was opened to my Tim Rogers interview. "Great job, Steph. Fantastic interview. But can we curtail it on the Savage Garden quotes the next time?"
Fuck you, Mark. That was direct from the Australian *Rolling Stone*. "No problemo," I said, doing my best not to look away from the computer screen.
"Anyway, I'm here to give you another assignment, since you did that so well. Spiderbait and Noiseworks are supposed to be in town next week. I need you to track down Stuart Fraser and interview him." He walked away before I could reply. I sighed. The lesson here: Never do a good job at something you despise; you'll just get asked to do it again.
As if on cue, my phone rang. I rolled my eyes and picked it up. "Stephanie here."
"Steph, my love."
"Daniel!" The one bright spot to my day. "Do you believe the fucker is making me track down Stuart Fraser now?" I kept a careful eye out for Mark, lest he would overhear my comment. I didn't need to lose my job that badly. "You'd think that just once, he'd be able to give me the location of where any of these people might be staying."
I heard a muffled voice in the background. "Daniel, what's that?"
Daniel chuckled. "Oh, that's Darren. He happens to be tied up at the moment." He laughed at his own stupid joke, which got me to giggling subtly. "How did you--"
"Your memory can't be that short-term, Steph. Darren is totally into submission now." Daniel paused to softly kiss him on the forehead. "When we're alone, he's totally at my command. Right now, he's being punished for giving a couple of young girls the brush-off. But don't worry--he'll be our good obedient angel in no time."
I smiled. Our angel. "Daniel, I miss you so much. Any chance I'm gonna see you before you fly back to Austraila?"
"We have to be back in New York to tape Rosie next week. I want to see you too. As does Darren." I heard Darren's happy muffled sigh. "I love you, Steph."
"I love you, Daniel." I craned my neck out of my cubicle. "Oh shit, I gotta go--the fucker is back. Talk to you later." I quickly hung up as Mark strolled back to my desk.
"I hope that phone call was research, Steph."
"Yes. For an article about where angels burn." I smiled sweetly as he wandered off, shaking his head. Mark always thought I was crazy. I smiled again at my small victory, and began my quest for Stuart Fraser's hotel.
