They are horsing around in the streets and talking trash about the Montague. They also are saying that if they were faced upon a Montague they will fight, but they won’t start it. Then they start speaking about having sex with their housemaids and how they are worthless and stuff. Abram and another serving man, who are from the house of Montague, approach. And they start a discussion, which then leads into a quarrel. Then enters Tybalt with the Capulet and his wife then there is this other argument. Tybalt who is strong headed and likes these fights almost joins in to fight, but the prince stops all of them. In another place Benvolio and Romeo are discussing. Romeo is saying how sad he his, for he is in love, but Rosaline (the girl he loves, but only has seen her once) is becoming a nun and that they cannot be together. Then he saying how love is unfair and very confusing and such forth. Which all of th Summary For Act 1 Scene 2 In this Scene Count Paris is having a conversation with Capulet asking his daughter Juliet, for marriage. Capulet instead says to wait until Juliet is a fourteen and in the meanwhile to look for other girls. In this conversation Capulet invites Paris to attend a feast he will be hosting that night. Capulet accidentally gives the list of invited guests to a servant who does not know how to read. The servant then asks Romeo and Benvolio if they could help him read it to him, unknowingly that Romeo and Benvolio are from the house of Montague. Romeo reads the list and sees that Rosaline is going to be there so they decide to crash the party. Summary For Act 1 Scene 3 Lady Capulet tells Juliet about Paris’s marriage proposal. Then the nurse and the Lady Capulet start discussing how wonderful Paris is and how beautiful he is in the inside as he is beautiful on the outside. Lady Capulet also remarks Paris as a book. Juliet is kind of surprised because she hasn’t considered marriage since she is only “12” years old Summary For Act 1 Scene 4 In this scene Mercutio, Benvolio, and Romeo are going to the Capulet’s party. Romeo is anxious to go because Rosaline, (his love) is going to be there. This is the only reason Romeo is going. Mercutio mocks Romeo for his obsession to love and fantasies and such. Mercutio uses a speech to make fun of Romeo. Mercutio uses a fairy named Queen Mab (who is the queen of dreams). In this speech he is saying how dreams are nonsense and it doesn’t mean anything. Act 1 Scene 4 Questions 1. “Soul of lead” 2. What is the point of the Queen Mab speech? 3. Compare Romeo’s version of love to Mercutio’s? 4. “ I fear to early for my mind missives some consequence yet hanging in the stars.” 1. “Soul of lead” means heavy heart. 2. The point of the Queen Mab’s speech is to show that to Mercutio dreams don’t come true and it is a waste of time to think so. 3. Romeo’s version of love is romantic and he believes in true love and he wants true love. Mercutio is cynical about it and doesn’t believe in the fantasy of it. 4. That quote means that there will be an untimely death after going to the feast Summary For Act 1 Scene 5 Capulet is welcoming his guest that are masked, and also welcomes Romeo, the only reason being is that they are masked and he can’t see his face. Once they are inside, Romeo sees Juliet and falls in love with her. He starts asking questions to see who she is. Tybalt who is also there recognizes the voice of Romeo and tells Capulet. Tybalt is outraged of the fact that Romeo is in the party he is determined to fight Romeo, but Capulet says no because he has guests and won’t stop down to the level of a teenager. Act 1 Scene 5 Questions 1. “ O, she doth teach the torches to burn bright! It seems to hang upon the cheek of night.” 2. “ Did my heart love till now? Foreswear it, sight, for I ne’er saw the beauty till this night.” 3. “ I will withdraw, but this intrusion shall now seeming sweet, convert to bitt’rest gall.” 4. “ My only love sprung from my only hate! Too early seem unknown and known too late!’ 1. The quote means that Juliet is so bright that she teacher of other things that are bright as well. 2. Romeo is saying that he just fell in love and that he has never seen beauty until this night. 3. Tybalt is saying that he will wait to kill Romeo, but that Tybalt’s wanting of Romeo dead will come true. 4. Juliet is saying that the one that she loves is the one she is suppose to hate and that even though she just knew him she already known, but it was to late. What is ironic of what Mercutio is saying 1. The ironic thing that Mercutio says in this scene is that Romeo is doing exactly as what Mercutio advised which is to play with love. Summary For Act 2 Scene 1 Romeo leaves the party to follow Juliet and know more about her. Meanwhile Mercutio and Benvolio look around for him. They joke around saying that Romeo took Mercutio’s advice and that he is with another girl or that he is so sadden he left.
