Oh wait! I just ran across this quote: quote: Those were crows! And nasty suspicious-looking creatures at that, and rude as well. You must have heard the ugly names they were calling after us.
Could you be referring to the crows as your third speaker?

How about William's purse? Hehehehe. I'm right, aren't I? Bless me! By the way, regarding the preceding question, Bilbo kept Dwalin's dark green cloak all the way through The Hobbit and took it out again when he left the Shire the night of his 111th Birthday party. I'll be seeing the film again next weekend when it finally arrives in Hong Kong, so I'll watch for that dark green colour, although it was described as being so old the colour could no longer be identified, except that it might be dark green!

Verily, Bungo has the answer for which I waited. I'm ashamed to say that I don't even remember the crows. Could you give me a pointer to their location in the story? --- I love it when people's answers tell you far more than you knew when you posed the question.

The crows are mentioned at the beginning of Chapter 15 - The Gathering of the Clouds. The thrush returns there and begins speaking. Balin says he wishes it was a Raven. Bilbo says he thought that Balin disliked the ravens, to which Balin responds with the aforementioned quote.

May I assume that it's my go? If so, I'll spice things up with two questions of different kinds. They're both easy, but what can you do. It's before 7:30 Saturday morning in Hong Kong. 1) How many times did Bilbo find himself up a tree? 2) How do we know there were grocery stores in Middle Earth?

Ah! My kind of questions! I believe that Bilbo was up a tree three times: To escape the wargs. To 'see' ahead in Mirkwood. (Black Butterflies!) To rescue the dwarves from the spiders. As for the grocery store bit, Gloin said, "He looks more like a grocer-than a burglar!" Which naturally infers that if there are grocers there must be grocery stores.

Nice touching base with you again, Mr. Blackwood. I was thinking of your terrific 'butcher' question (from a few months back) when trying to word the grocery store question, which you of course answered correctly. As for the tree question, you are also correct; although I was hoping to hear mention of the scene with the trolls where Bilbo ended "up in a bush, with his clothes and his skin torn, not daring to move for fear they should hear him." Alas, a bush is not a tree, so I'll settle for 'three' as the answer. Your go, Marcho my man. Do us proud.

Well it was nice to find a challenging question! The tree one was good and I, too, thought of the butcher question when I saw the grocer question. Nicely done, Bungo! Well, here's one that shouldn't be too difficult (grin!): Scarborough Fair What spices are mentioned in The Hobbit?

Well, with Mr. Tolkien, you are more likely to find spices while walking through a field than while eating. I find sage and thyme while they are all walking away from the misty mountains and toward a wolf crisis. So far, no sign of rosemary or parsley though.
If I'm right, my next question would be:
Which dwarf is referred to as being the strongest?

Bungo, you have two of the three! Since the other is in the same place and not everyone knows what it is, marjoram is the third.

Sorry, Marcho, but I didn't recognize marjoram from the song "Scarborough Fair". I was only looking for "Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme." Now I better listen to the song again.
In the meantime, all things being equal, it would be your turn, Lonely Turambar. Thorin called Dori the strongest when they were messing around with that boat on the enchanted stream in Mirkwood.

Well, marjoram isn't in Scarborough Fair, that was simply to provide a hint. Amazingly enough, there is no mention of any other flavorings, not even salt or pepper! The next closest thing for a cheif would have been the clover honey at Beörns.

When Bilbo dozed off after losing the dwarves in Mirkwood, he awoke to a spider tying up his legs. He started fighting the spider with his hands. And then remembering his sword he attacked the spider, first with a thrust to the eyes and then with a second lethal thrust. It was after this that he named his sword, Sting.
Was that what you were looking for, EW?
