Mr. Blackwood, perhaps the dragon wouldn't eat you for a commission of his own! Your go.
Orome, yes you are correct. I was going to mention it to Fingy but I haven't seen him the last couple days. He'll do it when he gets back, I'm sure.

This trivia thread is a great one to archive. I would be very disappointed if it were meddled with at all, or shifted, or deleted.
It is not like we here would like to have a copy (which can quite easily be done) but rather that new members could read this thread and realize that it has a spirit and tempo that is very unique.
Please do not think you are saving MT any space by starting this afresh. This is exactly the thread that makes MT a great place.

Okay, finally! Here we go:
How many units of measure are mentioned in The Hobbit? Name them!
I have 15, with 6 other units that are mentioned but not used in a measuring sense. I'm not referring to units in the sense of groups, so army, flock, herd etc are not what I am looking for, they are not associated with a specific measure.
Edited to include the time items in the numbers which Lug pointed out!

"league" is mentioned but not in its measuring sense.
"pound" is mentioned in its other sense
So I have 8 + 2...

Wow! Totally missed the time thing! There are minutes, hours, seconds and xxxx and xxxx and xxxx!
I seem to be having trouble counting!
There are 15 plus 6 (counting league)!

years, centuries, days I suppose!
Ok I need some clarification, I suppose I have 8+3 =11 (since seconds is also mentioned in its measuring sense a couple of times)
I am guessing I still need 3 of the original 8, taking the tally to 14.
Of the additional 6, I am assuming that we will have only 5 discounting "seconds" as it does appear in its measuring sense.
Of these I have 2.
11 + 2 (3 + 3 to go)

Hmm, I see the Master Surveyor has made some updates on his post. So we still have 4 more of the additional ones to go...

Some hints to move things along: 14. Volume 15. Time
4. Weight 5. Height 6. Volume (This one is not going to be found in most tables, but is commonly used.)

14. Volume: 'bottle'? 15. Time: Now this would have to be 'week' 16. A month is pretty much implied with the names for various months.
4. Weight: 'stone' 5. Height: 'hand'? 6. Volume: Are you referring to "cup"?

14. Volume: 'bottle'? NoI thought about this one when I was putting the question together, but while it is a unit, there is not a specific volume associated with the term. There are industry standards for the size of certain products, but it is the same as using the term "can." But a can could be 12 ounces, or a pint or even a liter, so I didn't count it. 15. Time: Now this would have to be 'week' Yes 16. A month is pretty much implied with the names for various months. Valid point, so we'll add it!
4. Weight: 'stone' Yes 5. Height: 'hand'? Yes 6. Volume: Would it help if I said I cooked a lot? 7. Cup: How could I have missed this? I had thought about it for the above catagory, but used the same thought as on 14 to discard it, failing to add it to this section, but it definitely fits here as the actual measure.

Wow, this is a good one. So what we have left are two units that measure volume (and one not necessarily in a "measuring" sense)? I'm at a loss.

I believe you have grasped the final tally appropriately, Thorin.
There are still two measures of volume whose names can be found written in the book, though one was not used in the measuring sense.
