Did Gandalf ride ahead to Rivendell before or after the troll incident? If it was after, then I believe that the last one you're looking for is "Gandalf before the troll encounter."
P.S. Welcome back, Marcho. Hope you had fun!

An elvish astronomer...
---------
Musnud the mighty: I remember Gandalf moving ahead only before the troll incident, which is what Mandin has mentioned, if he did separate again then I will search for a reference...
Estel: I did not know this, I will read this part again, but it's not the one I had in mind, this one is a scouting expedition and cannot be missed!!

I suggest Mandin asks one. Normally the last guesser asks but you're right he got almost all of them.

Well, it was actually April 8 when the last question was deemed answered, so let me revv this thread up a bit with an easy question.
What did Gandalf personally get out of the whole adventure?

I would like to think he made a lot of good friends! King of the Eagles, Beorn, Bilbo, all the Dwarves. even the Elf King, whom I expect already knew Gandalf. And I suspect he would have been able to get necessaties from Bard without much of a todo.

Well, I'm going to give it to The Mighty Musnud.
All of you gave nice answers, warm and fuzzy, but I was thinking of cold hard steel for this question. And the name of the sword is what counts.
Your go, M.M.

Why thank you, Bungo!
Okay. Here we go:
It was the middle of spring, the temperature outside was a balmy 70 degrees fahrenheit, and Bilbo and Gandalf had joined together for tea in Bilbo's delightful Hobbit-hole. Gandalf, however, kept fidgeting. "What's wrong?" Bilbo asked. "It's the temperature," Gandalf replied, "It doesn't seem right." Gandalf got up from his seat and strode to the air conditioner/heater, only to find the temperature set to an extreme. "What on Middle-earth?!?!" Gandalf exclaimed, turning towards Bilbo. "Sorry, I just like it way, I guess," Bilbo responded.
Which way does Bilbo like it? 50 degrees or 90 degrees? And what statement from the book would lead us to come to this conclusion?

Ahhh! Someone has asked another "musnud" and, even better, it is asked by the one who did the first "musnud" back on page seven of this thread; "The apple juice musnud."
Yes, friends, it is the one that the "musnud" is named after. Great question, mighty one.
It would be so cool if one day I asked a question of such a distinctive style that such a type would forever be known as a "bungo"!
(Wait a minute. Isn't a bungo the name for a terrible shot in golf?)
Anyway, I'm at work on that question, Musnud.

Very interesting question!
I have found a misleading quote: quote: "It is mighty cold!" said Bombur. "I wish we could have a fire up here as they have in the camp!" "It is warm enough inside," said Bilbo. "I daresay; but I am bound here till midnight," grumbled the fat dwarf
But we know of bilbo thinking of his fire-place in summer and spring... so

Your question is a real cracker, Musnud the Mighty. I can't find anything, even though I'm sure, like Lugbúrz, that Bilbo preferred heat. The most enjoyable answer I found is that Bilbo had uncomfortable dreams when he fell asleep that first night thinking about the stanza from the dwarves song: "Far over the Misty Mountains cold..."
Obviously you have a more ingeniuos answer than that. Any hints????

Hmmm, in looking at the musnud again, I'm beginning to wonder if it's a trick question. Here's the part:
"Sorry, I just like it that way, I guess," Bilbo responded.
Which way does Bilbo like it? 50 degrees or 90 degrees? And what statement from the book would lead us to come to this conclusion?
In the set-up, we learn that the outside temperature is 70. So, Bilbo "likes it" 20 degrees off, either up or down.
So maybe the question has more to do with 'twenty degrees' than with actual climate temperature.
Or maybe I need to stop obsessing and be a normal person.
