Each of the dwarves going to the trolls does not really count because they weren't the first on the same scouting expedition and they weren't lost.

So Mandin you have three!

There is another situation which happens twice, and I have counted it just once on my list. All of you no doubt will know which one that is.

It would be indeed a shame if citizens like you decided to post less here, Bungo. That would deprive people like me from reading the great posts that always stimulate a neural response, either in the face or in those deep cells which are otherwise unused.

Now Bungo, what in the world would you do with a normal life offline?

I am sorry, Lugburz, for my disruption. Just attempting in a very unwitty way to be witty.
I will write to myself how many of the sixteen I can think of.....
good gracious! I can only think of nine off the top of my head. I think I will PM you about some particulars..........
Well, I got it up to 14, possibly 15.

But I did reply to your pm Mandin [] and some of the other of the many pms [] [] [] []

Let's see. Last night I thought up all the chapter names and tried to place each incident by putting the person separated in a littled circle next to the chapter. I wonder if I can still remember which is which. Here I go!
1. Gandalf riding ahead - he talks to Rivendell elves.
2. Bilbo getting sent alone to check out the trolls.
3. Bilbo getting separated in the goblin tunnels.
4. Gandalf leaving at the entrance to Mirkwood.
5. Bilbo climbinb up the tree in Morkwood.
6. Bilbo getting separated from the group in Mirwood.
7. Thorin getting captured by the elves the first night off the path in Mirkwood.
8. Thorin getting put in a prison by himself by the elves.
9. Bilbo separated from dwarves in Mirkwood when they were captured by elves.
10. Bilbo on the barrels after sticking the dwarves into them.
11. (Not sure I got a true incident, as I've no Hobbit at present) Bilbo "on the doorstep" on Erebor. He hears the keyhole cracking, so calls the others to him.
12. Bilbo down to Smaug (2x)
13. Bilbo climbs up the mountain of treasure and down the other side, making sure Smaug is "Not At Home."
14. Bilbo leaves the Lonely Mountain to give the Archenstone to the elven king and Bard.
15. Bilbo all alone and quite invisible during and after the Battle of the Five Armies.

I need 1 more!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, Mandin, I'm not sure that being with the bodies of Kili and Fili is being left alone, but see the point.

And, small point, but Bilbo was not found by Gandalf after the battle of five armies. It was some un-named man who found him. I'v often wondered about him. Seems to be what I would expect my role in such an event to be. Going out searching for the bodies of the fallen.

I think you might add Bilbo's barrel riding as being seperated from the others, particularly the part where he goes looking for food.

Oh! Of course! Bilbo woke in the morning after the unexpected party and found no sign of any of the Dwarves or Gandalf, just piles of dishes!

Note: I am leaving for vacation at o'dark thirty tomorrow! I'll be back around April 8th. If I come back that is!

[] thanks Marcho. I wasn't much sure about the Thorin one, but I was desperate. I also wasn't sure if Gandalf found Bilbo. It is very handy for forgetful folk like me to have a Hobbit handy. Unfortunately I've not mine at present, and my family has lost theirs. As for Bilbo and the barrles - I though of that, but didn't think it would count.

Let's see. Cut Thorin left alone to fight in the battle. Cut Gandalf going to find Bilbo. Add: Bilbo alone after dwarves captured by Elves.
Bilbo alone on barrels.

Also, Master Lugburz, I think I can manufacture two incidents with Thorin at this time. Wasn't he captured by the elves the first night they strayed from the path - that's one.
And then he was separated again into a jail by himself. Don't know if this counts, but....?

Marcho this is not fair!!! You had some guts showing us those pictures. I need to make some money. []

------------
1. Gandalf riding ahead - he talks to Rivendell elves.
2. Bilbo getting sent alone to check out the trolls.
3. Bilbo getting separated in the goblin tunnels.
4. Gandalf leaving at the entrance to Mirkwood.
5. Bilbo climbing up the tree in Mirkwood.
6. Bilbo getting separated from the group in Mirwood. (Spider incident)
7. Thorin getting captured by the elves the first night off the path in Mirkwood. (and being taken to jail, the same incident)
8. Bilbo separated from dwarves in Mirkwood when they were captured by elves.
9. Bilbo on the barrels after sticking the dwarves into them. (Now this was the Bonus!)
10. Bilbo down to Smaug (2x)
11. Bilbo climbs up the mountain of treasure and down the other side, making sure Smaug is "Not At Home."
12. Bilbo leaves the Lonely Mountain to give the Archenstone to the elven king and Bard.
13. Bilbo all alone and quite invisible during and after the Battle of the Five Armies. (found by Bard's man)

So in effect we need 3 more situations and the Bonus seems to go to Marcho.

Mandin: I used your almost comprehensive list to detail the ones I accepted. I guess we can debate if the others are acceptable but these are what match my list.

Ok the Bonus requires a little explanation and here it is:

I was thinking of including that one but decided that he was still in a position to know where he was and wasn't thoroughly confused by his being alone.

We could include it but we still are looking for 3 more.

would you perhaps count that gandalf was in a tree all by his his self?

these are all specultations since I don't have my book. Didn't sombody find the stepps to the hidden door, while in the process of being alone.

This one I know for a fact but not sure if acceptable. Bombur was alone on the rope when Smaug came out of the mountain.

I rejected Bilbo near the hidden door, Gandalf alone on a tree doesn't fit in either. Bombur on a rope is when he was trying to climb up right? He knew where everyone was...

Mandin did tell me of another incident but he hasn't posted it here, it has perhaps slipped his mind:

Bilbo was left all alone in the eagle's eyrie, when Dori was taken to meet the Lord of the Eagles, he was totally at a loss where the others were and was in fact considering himself a "prisoner".

So now there is only one incident with Gandalf involved. Whoever gets it can ask the next question...

No answer, but thought I'd let you know I was back! Bungo, Guam? Hmmm, I think I could handle that!

Roads and planes go ever on,
Over rocks and under trees,
By ocean waves where sun does shine,
On paths that wonder by the sea;

Away from snow by winter sown,
And to the tropical flowers that bloom,
Over grass and volcanic stone,
And mountains in the new full moon.

The cold March winds blew through the front door as we loaded the van in the early morning hours. The driver chatted for a minute or two before we all lapsed into the silence that comes in the early morning to humans that dare to rise that early. An endless stream of lines, seats, instructions, small drinks and little bags of chips paraded through the traveler's brains. Finally, a cold drink in a tropical sun soothed our nerves as we shuttled into a van and arrived, after winding through ridiculously steep hillsides and narrow roads, at our home for the next ten days. We ended the day in shorts and t shirts with the waves splashing nearby, the full moon illuminating the fresh seafood served up before us and the lights of St. John glowing in the distance.

For ten mornings, the sun welcomed us to a day filled with azure skies and blue-green seas. Colorful fish and corals greeted us whenever we dared to stick our be-masked faces below the constant waves. Long sandy beaches compete in our memories with bright colors and sand accenting clear skies and green hills. Mongoose play in the tropical underbrush, darting between the cactus and aloe. Termite trails trace black lines across the paths and up the trees. Hermit crabs roll down the hillsides, hummingbirds dart from place to place and trees with strange shapes and curious textures cross above our heads.

Memorable meals with new and old friends treated our palates to new experiences and wonderful variety. An old thick stone walled farmhouse yielded a gourmet chef of the highest caliber. Heavily spiced shrimp served by the bowlful in a restaurant tucked behind shops and passages. Even a poolside feast of fish freshly caught by the waiter, and accented by a solo guitarist butchering familiar tunes in a cacophony of noise will remain fixed in our minds.

The stars and planets came down to visit with the aid of an 18 inch reflector, manned by an elvish astronomer. Jupiter and Saturn shared their moons and galaxies spun before our eyes. Dragons walked the earth here, gobbling up the food brought by trembling supplicants of all ages, spitting their displeasure when disturbed. Practiced fingers wove hair into long braids decorated by colorful baubles. Muscular men harnessed the wind to their will, dancing and spinning on the ocean waves. Long haired sirens walked the beaches, pulling the focus of eyes away from their tasks. Others soared in the wind, hundreds of feet in the air, the colorful wings of nylon blossoming out behind them.

The alarm clock brought us back to reality, shattering a relaxed sleep with its beeping insistence. Fewer bags going back, the food for lunches and breakfasts having been consumed. A solemn ride back to the airport, customs and security working its way through the fog of sleep, while we attempted to snatch bits of sleep. Turbulent skies and rain buffeted us as we returned to the Northern climes. A shoe went flat, causing me to limp through the last two airports. The seemingly endless wait for the bags to return to us, all arriving, just one minor sacrifice to the baggage handlers serving to placate the randomness of misadventure. The familiar house still sitting in its now greener surroundings opened to the key.

Roads and planes go ever on
Over clouds and under star,
Yet feet that wandering have gone
Turn at last to home afar.

Hands that work too oft have seen
And tired of talking to ears of stone
Look at last on a yard turned green
And trees and hills they long have known.
